Farewell to Miss Ban!

Farewell to Miss Ban!

Unfortunately, the time has come for staff and students at Carisbrooke College to say goodbye to Miss Ban – our wonderful Chinese language assistant.

After joining us last September, Miss Ban has spent the year helping students in all year groups with their Mandarin studies. She has worked in both KS3 and KS4 classes and has proved invaluable in every lesson she has been in. She was of particular assistance to the year 11s in the lead up to their GCSE spoken and written exams, offering help with both vocabulary and grammar and providing essential feedback to each of them.

Despite her calm and quiet personality, Miss Ban commands respect and many students have benefitted immensely this year from her reliability and professionalism. Although next week will be her last here with us before she returns to China, everyone at Carisbrooke hopes she’ll stay in touch with us for many years to come.

Thank you for all your hard work this year, Josie, and we wish you all the best with whatever comes next.

Year 11’s Final Assembly

Year 11’s Final Assembly

On Thursday morning we said an emotional farewell to our year 11 students in their final assembly.

Miss Begley, Mr Peake, Miss Bracegirdle and Mrs Hookey all gave speeches, as well as the four Tutors. Students also spoke about these staff who have played a particularly significant role in their time at Carisbrooke College.

Awards were presented for the final time for each subject area and each tutor group. Finally, students watched a video put together by staff who had messages of good luck and thanks to the students and a second video which was a montage of images of the students’ last five years.

After shirt signing and many selfies, the students departed at lunch time. They would have had a treat from the ice cream van but, due to time restraints, this will now happen on Monday 20 June after the students’ exam.

Thank you to the staff involved in putting this final assembly together to make it a special event for the students.

Head of School’s Blog – 10 June 2022

10 June 2022

It has been another busy start to the half term. I hope you all had an enjoyable Jubilee weekend. I have led the assemblies this week with years 7 to 9. The focus has been on Aspire and Achieve, the college’s strapline. I was very impressed with the uniform, attitude and behaviour of all the students and it was excellent to see the students nominated for the weekly subject awards.

On Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending the Osborne House Jubilee Concert. We were invited to perform at Osborne House on Tuesday evening along with students from Medina College and other schools on the island. This was to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Well done to all those involved. The performances were fantastic. The weather could have been kinder but at least it did not rain! Huge thanks to Mrs Peckham and all the staff who made the event possible.

We have ten students from year 10 taking part in a programme delivered by the University of Southampton named Learn with US.  They will be going on Tuesday 14 June and the focus for the day is the development of research skills and will be taught and demonstrated through the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We have two students, Blake and Twiggy, who are part of the 18 Scouts from the Island who have been selected to make up half of the Hampshire unit that will be travelling to South Korea to represent the Isle of Wight at the 25th World Scout Jamboree to be held in SaeManGeum, South Korea in August 2023.   Blake was asked and has accepted the role of Youth Shaped Champion, so will be representing his unit. There will be some fundraising in school to support this fantastic opportunity.

HPV vaccinations took place this week for year 8 and 9 students.  For the students who were unable to attend, there will be a catch up session towards the end of the month.  Details will be sent out shortly.

Thank you to all the parents/carers who booked appointments for the year 8 parents evening on Thursday 9 June.  The feedback from staff has been very positive.  The next parents’ evening is for year 7 and letters will be sent out in the next few weeks with details of how to book the virtual appointments.

It has been another full week of exams for Year 11. They have continued to be amazing in terms of their attitude and approach to the exams. A letter will be coming home with information about their last official day in school which is Thursday 16 June, after which they will just be expected to be in for exams

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for the last week of last half term. Year 7 Kyle, Year 8 Bethany (second week running), Sophie and Brooke, Year 9 Eleanor and Year 10 Christian.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Year 7 Boys Cricket

Year 7 Boys Cricket

In case you are wondering why there has not been a recent Avengers film released, it is because they have been hiding out in our year 7s.  Yesterday our Avengers took on The Island Free School in a year 7 boys cricket match.  As it was a straight knock out competition the pressure was on, especially considering they were playing away on a very narrow and uneven surface which the home side practised daily on.  However, this did not seem to impact on our Captain America (Daniel P), who after winning the toss went against the norm and elected to field first.

Like all good captains, Daniel opened the bowling and was supported by Iron Man (Wilfie), who with his lazer precise bowling accuracy made it very difficult for the home team to get going.  As the home team began to find their way into the game, the strength and unity of the Avengers eventually took its toll on them.  With Arrow (Shai), who from an impossible angle, fired the ball in from a distance to hit the only stump he could see in order to runout the opening batsman.   With the Hulk (Lincoln) bowling perfectly to frustrate them further, the home team stuttered in building a big score.  With Thor (Charlie) bringing the hammer down behind the wicket to stop anything from going past him and Black Panther (Liam) throwing himself all over the pitch to stop anything from going past him.  Whilst contributing with consistent and well pitched bowling, the home team just couldn’t see a way past.  When Dr Strange (Jack) got in on the action bowling almost a perfect over and making some impossible stops in the field when backing up, the home team just couldn’t comprehend the magic he could produce.   When Spiderman (Max) appeared, it was pretty much time for the white flag to come out for the home team thanks again to some quality fielding and bowling.

With 84 runs on the board, The Hulk and Captain America came out to bat and you could literally see Nick Fury (Mr Fleming) on the boundary smiling with confidence.  Daniel brought his shield out early hitting multiple quick runs and with Lincoln down the other end shouting Hulk Smash (best line ever) and the score went up quickly for the Avengers.  With the game turning ever one sided, Captain America hit boundary after boundary and as players have to retire on 25, he waited until he was on 24 to smash a 6 out of the galaxy.  With Hulk starting to strike out more and Black Panther darting between the stumps after stylish shots, the score continued to drive up.  Even once Hulk was runout, Arrow came to the crease with some big hits over the top of the fielders.  With one over left, Arrow retired to allow Dr Strange the opportunity to come and take us to the multiverse of champions.

The Avengers eventually won with 6 wickets in hand and four overs to spare.

Well done boys, excellent performance.

Welcome to this week’s newsletter

Lots to celebrate this week – Carisbrooke College came 2nd in the Interschool Team Show Jumping competition last Friday. Well done to Jessica and Amelia in year 10 and Freya in year 9 who took part. They were all in the placings individually with Jessica finishing 3rd and Amelia 5th in their section. Freya did incredibly well winning her section.

Congratulations to Grace and Eleanor who were a credit to Carisbrooke College. They were invited down on Tuesday 24 May to meet HRH The Earl of Wessex. This was on the back of the journalism workshops project they have been involved in with Independent Arts. A huge thanks to Mrs Buckett for making this happen!

Medina hosted the Isle of Wight Education Federation’s Business Innovation Challenge on Thursday. I was disappointed that I was unable to take up my invitation to be on the judging panel and, on hearing how fantastic all the students were, I was even more so! A member of staff emailed me to say “Both Medina College and Carisbrooke College students were amazing. You would have been very proud”. Thank you to Mrs Mackett for enabling the students to have such a brilliant experience. Well done to everyone who took part.

We are very proud to hear that Millie in year 9 will be in the Jubilee Parade in London for the Queen’s Jubilee. Millie is a member of the Starlight Academy who are taking part in the ceremony. What a fantastic opportunity for her. Not only is she part of a once in a lifetime event she will get to see Ed Sheeran and George Ezra at the gig that is taking place too. Looking forward to hearing more about her experience and hopefully some pictures.

Year 11 students have continued to be amazing this week. Their attitude and behaviour in the exams and in lessons in between has been excellent. Please continue to encourage your child to revise for their exams and if they have any concerns, to contact the year office. The first week back after the half term break is another intensive one for them. Breakfast will continue to be from 7.45 am to year 11 who have morning exams. It does not seem possible that they have less than two school weeks left in compulsory education!

You should have received information on the Year 8 virtual Parents’ Evening which is Thursday 9 June between 4.00 – 7.00 pm. Letters and links to the system have been emailed home. Thank you to all of you that have booked appointments already. If you have not yet done so, then please do book them as this is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress so far this year.

A gentle reminder that in the first week back after half term, Year 8 students will be having their HPV vaccinations in school on Tuesday 7 June and year 9 on Wednesday 8 June. If you would like your child to receive this vaccination and haven’t yet completed the consent form, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week – Year 7 Zach and Tali, Year 8 Bethany, Year 9 Hollie and Year 10 Jessica and Lennon.

I hope you have a lovely half term and enjoy the extended bank holiday weekend for the platinum Jubilee.

Trip to the British Basketball Final

Trip to the British Basketball Final

On Sunday 15th May, over 40 students attended the British Basketball Final at the O2 Arena to watch the Leicester Riders take on the London Lions.  This was a reward trip for those who have represented the school in basketball this year. It proved to be a great trip and one that all involved thoroughly enjoyed; even if Mr Peake was the only one that was truly happy about Leicester Riders winning!

The students represented the school extremely well and were complimented on their behaviour and attitude by Nigel, the coach driver. Despite getting back close to midnight and having to endure a crossing over the solent in a thunderstorm, they kept the singing going all the way until they reached the car park at Carisbrooke.

Not only did they get to watch the two best teams in Britain challenge each other in a game that went down to the final shot, but they got to do so in the number one basketball arena in the country.

We hope that next year we will see participation in basketball grow even further. Any student wishing to take part is always welcome. Well done to team Carisbrooke and thanks for a great day!

Exams Breakfasts

Exams Breakfasts

Well done to Year 11, they have had a great start to the exam season and we are so proud of them all already! They have arrived well-prepared for their exams and have shown exemplary behaviour and conduct.

We provide a range of breakfast options, free of charge, for all students before every morning exam to ensure that everyone has the best chance of success. Take a look at this article which shares why certain foods and staying well hydrated can help on exam days: https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/articles/food_exam_performance

It has been great to see students arriving early to make the most of the breakfast options and providing moral support to each other.

Head of School’s Blog – 13 May 2022

13 May 2022

Welcome to the third newsletter of this half term.

I want to start by congratulating Freddie in year 7 who has won a prize in the University of Southampton Maths Challenge. This is an amazing achievement and we are all very proud of his success! You can read more about this further down in the newsletter.

This week saw the start of the written exams for Year 11 with next week being the start of the whole year group exams with maths, English and Biology. I am very proud of Year 11 with how well they have dealt with exams; their behaviour and attitude have been excellent. Please encourage your child to revise well but remember to take regular breaks and have time to relax. We are offering hot and cold breakfasts for those students who have a morning exam. This will be served from 7.45 am and is a good opportunity for students to discuss any concerns or issues they may have prior to their exams, with a member of the teaching staff. Just a reminder that all morning exams start at 9.00 am. And students need to line up at 8.45 am. Students taking an exam in the afternoon will have an early lunch at 12.20 pm. All afternoon exams start at 1.00 pm and students need to be at the student entrance at 12.45 pm. Important and useful information about examinations can be found here.

Thursday 9 June is the Year 8 virtual parents’ evening. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s progress with their individual subject teachers. Information on how to book appointments will be sent before the end of term.

On Sunday, a group of students are travelling to London to watch the British Basketball play-off final. It looks to be a very exciting event and I look forward to sharing some photos in our newsletter next week. I hope you all enjoy your day!

You have received a letter regarding Queen’s Platinum Jubilee as we are entitled to an additional bank holiday this school year. As this event falls within our current half term we are taking Monday 20 June as our additional bank holiday. Therefore, Carisbrooke College will not be open to students on this day, the only exception to this is Year 11 students taking exams, in which case, these will be taking place on site as planned.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week – Year 7 Lucas, Year 8 Louis, Year 9 Twiggy, Year 10 Lily and Year 11 Matthew.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

The Kings Challenge Assembly

The Kings Challenge Assembly

Year 10 students were extremely lucky to have an assembly last week with Emily King. Emily is currently completing a massive three day charity challenge where she is circumnavigating the Island twice, by stand up paddle board and by bicycle, then running a marathon across the centre of the Island.

Emily began stand up paddle boarding after a vicious dog attack left her with PTSD and agoraphobia. She is now one of the UK’s most successful paddle boarding athletes.

Emily is a passionate supporter of mental health and is completing the charity to support the Isle of Wight Youth Trust. Emily spoke to students about resilience and overcoming obstacles, how she stays motivated and the work involved in her training. We are very grateful to Emily for giving up her time to inspire our students.

Head of School’s Blog – 6 May 2022

6 May 2022

Welcome to the second newsletter of the Summer term. I hope you had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend.

Firstly, thank you to those year 10 parents who had meetings with their child’s subject teachers on Wednesday for parents’ evening.  Our year 10 teachers found them very useful and we hope parents did too.

I would like to congratulate Kereena  in year 10 on her achievement so far in the Duke of Edinburgh award. Another outstanding participant in the award. Like Grace who I mentioned last week, she has completed the Bronze Award and is now enrolled on the Silver Award. She has signed up to the ‘Introduction to DofE Young Leaders Programme Session’. Well done Kereena.

Year 11 now have 8 days before they have their first written exam. They have been briefed in assembly this week on routines and expectations. All morning exams are expected to start at 9.00 am. Students need to meet at the school entrance where they currently line up at 8.45 am. Students taking an exam in the afternoon will have an early lunch. This will be at 12.20 pm. All afternoon exams are expected to start at 1.00 pm. Again, students will meet at the student entrance at 12.45 pm. Important and useful information can be found on our website here: Examinations

Just a gentle reminder to parents that there should be no parking or waiting for students in front of the barriers on the bus loop. We have had some issues this week with buses not being able to park up to collect our students safely.

Finally, I would like to congratulate our amazing Dance Live team for their performance on Tuesday evening at the Portsmouth Guildhall.  Unfortunately they did not make the top three but considering they were up against schools specialising in Performing Arts, they did a fantastic job. I and all the staff there supporting them were so proud. We are already looking forward to next year’s entry!

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week – Year 7 Samuel, Year 8 Freddie, Year 9 Olivia, Year 10 Charlie and Year 11 Sam.

I hope you have a lovely weekend
