Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood Festival of Speed

On 13 July, 24 students from Carisbrooke College and 24 students from Medina College were fortunate enough to attend the 30th Goodwood Festival of Speed. We were very kindly gifted the entrance tickets by the festival. This STEM orientated trip was fun, informative and inspirational. All of the students had a great time seeing how technology and engineering has evolved and loved exploring the interactive exhibits. They saw cars that were 100 years old right up to modern F1 cars!

Here is a report from student, Maggie B:
I really enjoyed going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. We started off by seeing the Future Lab, which is the FOSTech area whhich incorporates the STEM activities. This area covered technological advances that have been made or that could be implemented in different areas; There were robots for the NHS that could navigate around without collision , we got to interact with facial tracking softwares and futuristic technology that could make testing for illnesses in the NHS quicker and cheaper. Then we moved on to see both old and new cars for both racing and exploration and there were many interactive games, we also saw motorbikes and off road cars racing around the track to qualify for the hill climb. At 11.30 there was a Red Arrows display.

Reward Trips 2023

Reward Trips 2023

Students at Carisbrooke have been working hard all year to earn a spot on the annual reward trips. This year students gained a place on the trip just like in the previous five years for receiving the highest achievement points, very few if any behaviour points and if they had a good attendance record. Whilst we would love for every child to experience these types of events, we also believe that these experiences are earned and not simply a privilege that is just given. Students are challenged to apply themselves all year in a way that would see them meet the schools key expectations linked to ASPIRE (Ambition, Success, Progress, Inspiration, Respect and Equality). As a result of all this hard work 49 students from year 7 went to Splashdown and 119 student’s across year 8, 9 and 10 went to Paultons Park earlier this week.

All the students involved had a great time and the staff were so impressed with how they conducted themselves throughout. All the feedback from the external providers including coach companies, ferry services and the two visited centres has been so pleasing to receive due to it only highlighting what we know our students are – kind, positive, helpful and a pleasure to have met.

Some of our year 9 students enjoyed the experience so much they wrote the following report:

On Tuesday a group of 119 year 8, 9 and 10s went to Paultons Park for their rewards trip. The day started relatively early as students had to get to school by 7.30am to get to the park promptly at 10am. It was an incredible day, with great experiences for the students. There was a wide range of rides that most students spent the day going on. There were smiles all round. The students went round the park in groups with their friends. This was an amazing day and we hope to have more fun days like this in the future. We really feel like we were being rewarded for our efforts in school this year.

Some of our year 7 students also wrote:

Splashdown is amazing. The slides are fast and exciting and when we are all there together along with our teachers it really felt like something special. We feel that we have earned this trip this year and really should feel proud of ourselves for achieving this experience. It was really fun seeing out teachers shoot down the slides and soak everyone at the bottom. I have not laughed this hard in so long and can’t wait to go again. Thank you to my teachers for organising.

Year 8 Trip to Marwell Zoo

Year 8 Trip to Marwell Zoo

65 Year 8 students enjoyed an adventure to Marwell Zoo on Monday. It was fantastic to see the students learning about a wide range of animals whilst trying their best to spot some of the zoo favourites, such as the elusive Amur Leopards! It was quite fitting to have our rewards trip at the zoo considering when the students saw a park with swings and a slide, their inner wild animal came to light!

Both students and staff had a great day and it was lovely to see these students enjoy their reward trip, as they have worked so hard over the course of the year. They were excellent role models for the school and we could not be any more proud of how our young people from Medina conducted themselves.

Annual Awards Ceremony

Annual Awards Ceremony

We held Medina College’s prestigious annual Awards Celebration last Thursday evening and what an event it was! The evening began with a wonderful performance from the Federation choir singing ‘Royals’ by Lorde. Mrs Southwell, as MC, then started proceedings and introduced Mr Parr-Burman who emphasised how each of the winners had demonstrated the key qualities of perseverance, resilience and determination. There then followed subject awards which were presented by our chair of governors, Mr Bridgeford; citations were read by the teachers who nominated the students (which added a personalised touch).

As the evening proceeded, we were treated to a performance by the VI Form band, led by the truly talented Tilly Grimshaw on vocals and guitar and backed by the equally gifted Josef Krista on piano and Rufus Reader on the bass. We also had a spine-tingling performance of Sam Smith’s ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ by Hannah Cox which left a certain executive headteacher with a tear in his eye.

Awards culminated in three very special awards: The Progress and Achievement Award won by Oliver K, The Endeavour Award won by Finn M and the Head of School Award won by the inspirational Summer R. The evening was rounded off superbly by a majestic performance on the piano from Oliver K. All in all, it was an evening of celebrating the absolutely marvellous young people that it is our privilege to nurture and teach.

Annual Awards Ceremony

Annual Awards Ceremony

On Wednesday 12th July, Carisbrooke College hosted our annual awards evening and for the first time we held the special occasion on our school grounds. As a result, a lot of time and effort late into many evenings was given by some key staff in order for the event to take place and be the amazing success that it was.

Thank you to Anna Mursell, and Donna Keogh along with their team for producing and collating all the information needed for the evening including checking all the citations. For also ironing over 40 table cloths, decorating the venue and making it look simply amazing. Thank you to Pete Ball and the premises team for all the hard work in moving over 400 chairs, laying the flooring and organising the tables whilst not disrupting the normal school days. Thank you to Beth Peckham and Richard Wiseman for setting up and leading our amazing music students during the evening. Thank you to Tina Lythgoe, Orla O’Callaghan, Nikki McDowall, Judy Smith and Julie King for being the amazing head of years that you are and ensuring the students were greeted and supported through the evening. Thank you to Hattie Buckett and Kirsty Jones for taking all the photos throughout the evening, they are amazing. Thank you to Dean Lyle and Beth Peckham for being the MC for the night and doing so in a way that only you can. Thank you to RIchard Bridgford (school governor) who kindly spent the whole evening shaking hands and giving out certificates. Thank you to the staff who wrote the citations and took hours discussing who should eventually win the awards as this is not easy in a school full of amazing and talented students. Finally, thank you to the students and their families for making the evening possible due to being who they are.

Throughout the evening, over 100 students received awards for their efforts this year which included individual subjects and year group awards, sports team of the year (Girl’s Cricket) and some whole school awards. Our talented music students performed a number of songs and it is always such a great sight to see our students and staff playing alongside each other.

For those students who received an award, there will be photos produced which we will be giving to you in September, or for year 11s on results day in August.

This leaves me with one final comment to make. Students you are the pride of Carisbrooke College, the Isle of Wight and the country. Now go show the world how truly great you are!

Have a safe and happy summer.
Mr Peake

Year 7 Trip to Tapnell Water Park

Year 7 Trip to Tapnell Water Park

80 Year 7 students enjoyed an action-packed day on Wednesday, starting with a dodgeball tournament and then a short bus journey to Tapnell Farm’s Water Park.

It was great to see the students having fun and embracing the chilly waters. The satisfaction the students gained from pushing the teachers in the water was slightly concerning, but it was all good fun and the teachers gave as good as they got! There were a lot of aching bodies the following day.

The students were incredible throughout the day with their manners, behaviour and sense of humour. I was so proud of them all! They fully deserved the day for their exemplary behaviour and attendance throughout the year.

Lit in Colour Library

Lit in Colour Library

Following on from our Year 12 trip to the national Lit in Colour conference last week, another part of The Island VI Form being a 2023 Lit in Colour pioneer school is the wonderful library we have been given by Edexcel and the programme’s partners, in particular Penguin Books and The Runnymede Trust.

In all the library contains about 300 texts, and it ranges from Key Stage 3 through to A level, covers non-fiction, poetry and prose, and includes current authors like Bernardine Evaristo, Yaa Gyasi, Benjamin Zephaniah and Caleb Azumah Nelson, as well as historical writers of colour, all helping to extend the diversity of the reading experience available to our students. In particular, our A level English Literature students have been able to use the library straightaway to make their own choices for the texts they will study for their coursework project, as well as Kamila Shamsie’s Home Fire and Lynn Nottage’s Sweat that they are reading for their exams. There are books from the collection that can be borrowed from the Carisbrooke and Medina College Libraries, and from our A level Literature classrooms at VI Form.

Huge thanks go to Edexcel and the organisers for such an inspiring initiative, and we can’t wait to share the books with as many of our students as possible in the future.

Royal County Show 2023

Royal County Show 2023

Earlier this month, our iGCSE Agriculture students were invited to participate in this year’s Royal County Show in Cowes. Over the two days, our students were involved in leading and showing sheep and cows in the show ring, as well as promoting the iGCSE agriculture course at the Medina College stand. They even met Alan Titchmarsh, famous gardener and TV Presenter!

Working with the general public and farming community, our students represented themselves and our College wonderfully, setting the very highest of standards. It was a great opportunity to put their learning into practise and helped to build the students’ confidence.

Course Leader for agriculture, Miss Lloyd, said “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and we are very grateful to Graham Biss, Chairman of the County Show, for inviting us to take part. I am so proud of all of the students on the agriculture course and how much they have learnt in this first year.”

We very much hope to be back at the show next year with the 2024 cohort of agriculture students!

U13 Boys’ Cricket Final

U13 Boys’ Cricket Final

On Wednesday 19 July, our u13 boys cricket team took on The Bay in the final of this year’s competition which was held at Arreton CC.

Carisbrooke won the toss and elected to bowl.  Liam G opened for Carisbrooke and limited The Bay to only the odd single and eventually broke the deadlock in the 5th over by bowling their opener.  As the innings progressed, all of the boys took it in turn bowling and all performed well taking a further 6 wickets including two caught and bowled efforts from Daniel P.  The Bay posted a beatable target of 78 and, as Carisbrooke walked out with Jack E and Lincoln O, the team felt confident they could chase the runs down. However, with an early run out and then a couple of surprise early wickets which included Liam G and Daniel P, Carisbrooke fell to 8 runs for 3 wickets and looked like collapsing early on.  However, Charlie G and Wilfie T steadied the ship and got Carisbrooke up and running, putting together a partnership which took us past the 40 mark.

With only 6 overs left, Charlie then got out to some good bowling from The Bay. However, with Harvey P who was stepping in and playing up a year due to some late withdrawals on the day from the regular squad, there was still hope.  Harvey played some nice shots before getting bowled but stayed out in the middle with Wilfie as the last batter.  Wilfie continued to swing at everything and at one point it felt like it was meant to be, but then with only just over two overs left, an unlucky shot which was played onto his own wickets finally allowed The Bay to take the win.  Final score: The Bay 78 Carisbrooke 55.

Well done to all of the boys for their efforts and for taking part with such a good spirit and togetherness.

Individual highlights:
– Liam was a great captain who never stopped talking when behind the wickets.
– Daniel was outstanding with the ball in hand and really needs to come back to the game full time.
– Wilfie demonstrated consistency with the ball and the grit he showed with the bat was truly inspirational.
– Jack bowled a lovely over and prevented numerous boundaries out in the deep.
– Lincoln also bowled a great over and put his body behind some well hit shots.
– Charlie with some excellent wicket to wicket bowling and Mr Calm and collective when batting.
– Harvey did a superb one-hand pick up in the field nearly resulting in a runout and, for a student younger than everyone else, showed exactly why he is never out of his depth in sport.

Conquering the Brecon Beacons

Conquering the Brecon Beacons

Over the course of four days, a team of ten spirited adventurers’, accompanied by experienced leaders, faced nature’s full force, with rain hammering down relentlessly for three of those four days. The expedition, nestled in the heart of Wales, proved to be a true test of character, pushing these young adventurers to their limits and beyond.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is renowned for its commitment to nurturing self-confidence, resilience, and teamwork among young people. The participants in this expedition had chosen the adventurous option, fully aware of the trials that lay ahead. Little did they know that the weather would add an extra layer of complexity to their journey.

Day 1: Optimism Amidst Overcast Skies

Under the shadow of looming grey clouds, the team embarked on their expedition with high spirits and optimism. The first day’s hike saw them navigating through rolling hills, enchanting valleys, and ancient woodlands. Despite the heavy packs and occasional drizzle, their energy remained unwavering as they conquered the initial stretch with camaraderie and laughter.

Days 2: Battling the Elements

As the team delved deeper into the Beacons, the heavens opened up, unleashing a torrential downpour that seemed relentless. Every step became more arduous, and the once-beautiful landscapes transformed into slippery, muddy challenges. But quitting was not an option for these adventurers. It was during these trying moments that the true essence of the Duke of Edinburgh Award’s values shone through. Each participant displayed remarkable perseverance and unwavering determination to keep moving forward. They embodied the spirit of teamwork, encouraging one another and lending a helping hand when needed most.

The Campsite: An Oasis in the Storm

At the end of each gruelling day, the weary yet resolute team found solace in the carefully chosen campsites. Tents pitched, they gathered together to share their experiences, swap stories of triumphs and setbacks, and provide support to fellow participants who might be feeling disheartened by the relentless rain. Campfires were replaced by waterproof jackets as they gazed up at raindrop-speckled tent ceilings. Despite the adverse conditions, the expedition forged lasting bonds among these young adventurers, transforming them into a closely-knit group ready to conquer whatever challenges lay ahead.

Day 3: The Sun Breaks Through

On the third day, the rain clouds finally parted, revealing the stunning views of the Brecon Beacons in all their glory. The landscape seemed to breathe a sigh of relief alongside the participants. Buoyed by the newfound sunshine and with their spirits lifted, the team tackled this leg of their expedition with a renewed vigour.

Day 4: The Heavens Open

On the final day of the expedition, our adventurers’ hopes of a sunny day were vanquished as towering rain clouds rolled in over the hill. This final trial was faced head long as the adventurers power through the mud, trees and rain to get to the end.

Their journey concluded with a sense of accomplishment and triumph that comes from overcoming adversity. Exhausted but jubilant, the group returned with stories etched in their memories and lessons etched in their hearts.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition to the Brecon Beacons was a testament to our amazing young people. It showcased the strength that lies within the hearts of these young adventurers and how, even in the face of relentless rain, they emerged as stronger individuals.

As they return to their daily lives, the experiences and challenges they conquered in the Brecon Beacons will serve as a beacon of resilience and determination, guiding them to embrace future opportunities with open hearts and unwavering resolve.

We would also like to thank Mr Bridle, Miss Murray and Miss Bailey for all of their hard work on this trip.
