Head of School’s Blog – 28 March 2024

Welcome to the final blog for this term.

We are aware that some fake Tik Tok accounts have been set up. We do our best to investigate these and report them to Tik Tok to be blocked. However, I would like your support with this, so ask that if you come across such an account, can you please also report them so we can shut these down as quickly as possible.

This week I have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in our celebration assemblies and giving out Headteacher Awards, Tutor Awards, ASPIRE Awards and 100 Attendance certificates.  Congratulations to all of the students who received certificates.  Your hard work has paid off.

We held a mufti day today in aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.  Thank you to all the students and staff that took part.  So far we have raised a fantastic £391 and the money is still coming in.

Please remind students in Year 11 of the revision sessions that are taking place over the Easter holidays and encourage them to take part.  Also, to revise for their exams whilst still enjoying their break and taking time to relax. Hard work pays off – stick to your revision timetable and remember to take time out to relax as well.

Congratulations to our highest achievement point winners from last week – Maxi – Year 7, Hannah Year 8, Mia and Madison Year 9, Brooke Year 10 and Darcy Year 11.

I look forward to seeing students returning to school in full uniform and ready to learn on Monday 15 April.

Have a lovely Easter break.

Head of School’s Blog – 28 March 2024

Dear Students, Parents & Carers,

Have a great break. I’m calling it a break rather than holiday, as there is a clear expectation for both year groups that you should be doing revision for the upcoming exams.

Year 13 in particular should be finishing creating revision materials by the end of Easter to allow time to go over their notes multiple times to burn the knowledge into their long term memory.
Remember that there are a number of revision sessions on offer over the break (see timetable below).

Thank you to staff and students for a great term, the next one will fly by! Lessons re-start on Monday 15 April at 8.50 am.

Eat – Sleep – Revise – Repeat (plus look after yourself – exercise, relax etc…).

Happy Easter!

Head of School’s Blog – 28 March 2024

It is hard to believe that we are now at the end of the Spring term, 2024 seems to be moving at a rapid rate. Next term is a big term for our Year 11 as they start their formal GCSE exams, so we wish them luck preparing for these over the holidays and we look forward to welcoming them back and helping to support them through this rite of passage.

Please remember to book for Year 10 parents evening on Thursday 18 April, this is between 4-7pm in person and appointments can be made through Arbor.

We wish students who are taking part in the Ski trip during the second half of the holidays a safe and enjoyable time, let’s hope for plenty of snow!

There have been so many amazing sporting fixtures taking place recently and I know that many of these are covered in the school newsletter, so please ensure you are looking at this communication. We have also been busily celebrating student success in our celebration assemblies, it is lovely to be able to shout loudly and proudly about student success.

It leaves me to wish you a safe and enjoyable Easter break. I very much hope you enjoy this time to recharge batteries and hopefully come back to some better weather in the summer term.

Faraday Challenge Winners!

Faraday Challenge Winners!

Cooper, Lilly, Jacob, Dakota, Jack and Karla represented Carisbrooke College at the annual Faraday Challenge, hosted at Christ the King College by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). The challenge is a competition in which pupils are given a brief – this year the theme was on road safety – and then asked to design, produce and present a prototype product that meets the criteria of the brief. Pupils are given a budget of ‘Faraday Bucks’, which they must use to buy electrical and mechanical components from a ‘shop station’ (run by the IET) which they use to make their product.

It should be stressed that the pupils do not receive any help from teachers or adults, aside from purely technical guidance from the judges if they get stuck, making the engagement, dedication and hard work from the pupils all the more impressive.

Inspired by island roads, the team came up with an idea of a device that alerts cars on blind corners that an on-coming car is coming. Over the course of the day, our six Year 8 pupils impressed the judges with their prototype, organisation skills and teamwork, as well as their confident presentation.

They went on to beat the teams from Island Free School, Ryde School, Priory and 2 teams from Christ the King to win! Only 3 points separated the top 3 teams, and the judges expressed that they were particularly impressed by the quality of the prototype, the pragmatism and simplicity of their idea, and the team’s meticulous and clear write-up of their project! They now have a chance at attending the grand finals at Silverstone this summer, once all 251 schools in the project cave competed!

Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers

Earlier this half term, 55 students went to The Mayflower Theatre to see Blood Brothers. The play is the GCSE drama set text, so seeing it live was an amazing opportunity to help our students answer questions for the their written exam. The students were exceptionally well behaved throughout the day and thoroughly enjoyed the play. It was lovely to hear so many discussions about particular scenes and characters on the boat on the way home!

Head of School’s Blog – 22 March 2024

We are now about to start the last week of term; please remember that our last day is Thursday 28 March and students return to school on Monday 15 April.

This week we have had some lovely events occurring, including lots of sporting fixtures. We also have had a film crew in school to film our MVP (Mentors in Violence Prevention) students for their national training material. On top of this, Year 11 have completed their practical drama exams –  congratulations to all of them.

Information regarding revision sessions that are taking place during the Easter break for Year 11 has been emailed to parents this afternoon and can be found here. Please do encourage students to access this valuable additional support.

Next week, we will be saying goodbye to two members of staff who are sadly leaving us for pastures new. Mrs Peters and Ms Ferguson will be very much missed but we wish them well in their next exciting adventures.

Finally, I would like to congratulate our Hot Chocolate Friday winners: Freddy, Lilly, Lyla, Harrison, Lily-Grace, Mason, Ebony, Daisy, Emily and Izzy. They all won their golden ticket by either having 100% attendance in the last week or were top achievement point winners in their year.

Have a lovely weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 22 March 2024

Welcome to the blog for this week.

I will start by saying how proud I am of the six year 8 students who attended the Faraday Challenge at Christ the King College this week.  The challenge was to create a new device or system to improve road safety.  Inspired by island roads, the team came up with a very impressive idea of a device that alerts cars on blind corners that an on-coming car is coming. They impressed the judges with their prototype, organisational skills and confident presentation.  They won! By beating teams from Island Free School, Ryde School, Priory and two teams from Christ the King, and have a chance at attending the grand finals at Silverstone this summer.  Congratulations to the team and huge thanks to Mr Roux for organising and taking them.

The Student Council voted last week for a colour themed mufti day on Thursday 28 March. The colours are as follows: Year 11 – Black, Year 10 – Blue, Year 9 – Green, Year 8 – tones of Grey/Brown/Beige and Year 7 – colours of the rainbow. It is £1 and payment can be made via Arbor (school shop) or cash on the day, whichever is preferred. The money raised will go to The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

Last week we had our monitoring visit by the Hampshire Inspection Advisory Service. Lessons and social times were observed and students and staff invited to discussions. They observed positive behaviour for learning, felt the school was calm and that students were well behaved, polite and able to communicate confidently. We will get a written report in due course.

Parents/carers of Year 10 are now able to book appointments for the face to face Parents’ Evening on Wednesday 17 April using the Arbor App. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss your child’s progress in school and raise any concerns that you may have. If you have any problems with booking appointments, please contact donna.keogh@iwef.org.uk.

As a school, we celebrate the achievements of students in and outside of school. I am delighted to share the success of one of our year 9 students. Summer competed in her first archery competition last weekend, competing in three competitions against juniors from the island and the mainland. She won all three of her competitions achieving personal bests and has achieved a Hampshire County record. She went on to receive the tournament championship trophy over the whole competition which included the adults as well as the juniors. Well done Summer, you should be so proud of yourself, as are your parents and the Carisbrooke community.

Can I please remind parents/carers of the importance of using the Arbor App. This is how we communicate with you and where you can see a breakdown down of your child’s time in school including attendance, behaviour and achievement points, detentions, timetables etc. It is also where you book parents’ evening appointments. If you have not already downloaded the app, please contact donna.keogh@iwef.org.uk for login details.

Congratulations to our top achievement winners from last week. Year 7 joint winners – Evie, Lexi and Shayna, Year 8 – Riley, Year 9 joint winners – Logan and Zach, Year 10 – Deacon and Year 11 – Harriet. Well done to you all.

Finally, information regarding revision sessions that are taking place during the Easter break for Year 11 has been emailed to parents this afternoon and can be found here. Please do encourage students to access this valuable additional support.

Have a lovely weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 22 March 2024

Dear students, Parents & Carers,

Just four school days until the Arts based exams start and 28 school days until study leave for the Year 13 students begins – 20 May. Some exams will be before that date and BTEC/Vocational students are in school and working until they have finished their unit work. Individual examination timetables will be shared when we return after the Easter break.

Thank you for your understanding during the finance talk that didn’t go to plan due to technical issues at Solent University. We are re-organising this and will record it if you are unable to attend.

Year 12 should be researching University courses and going on Open day visits. We will let you know when you can start to register with UCAS to start the formal application process.

Year 13 students should be firming up their offers from Universities. Make sure that you accept offers before the deadline. Deadlines will depend on the date of your offer. Student Services, mentors and your teachers are all available to give advice if needed. There is also a UCAS helpline for students should you need it:  03714 680468.

UCAS ‘Clearing’ will start to come online soon, where Universities advertise unfilled places for people who are unhappy with their offers or fail to get the grades required. We will be providing advice on this next term.

Hard work pays off – stick to your revision timetable and remember to take time out to relax as well. Have a good weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 15 March 2024

Welcome to the blog for this week.

Year 11 has seven weeks until their first written exam. Information will be coming out next week about revision opportunities available over the Easter holidays. They need to make sure that they use their time wisely – the hard work they put in now will be reflected in their final grades.

On Tuesday we had 81 year 10 students on a trip to see a performance of Macbeth in Southsea. The students were a credit to Carisbrooke College and I’d like to thank them and the staff involved – an excellent opportunity for the year 10s to see a play they are studying for their English GCSE. The students’ feedback about the performance was excellent.

Thank you to the year 9 students for submitting their options forms for year 10. During the process the students have been extremely mature and have asked lots of questions to assist them in their decision making. If you have forgotten to hand it in, please do so by Monday 18 March.

Attendance has dropped the last couple of weeks, especially in year 8. Lower attendance clearly has an effect upon the academic progress of students. Studies show that a student with 92% attendance or lower will, on average, achieve GCSE results that are one grade lower than their peers. In addition to this, absence from school can cause pastoral issues such as feeling lonely or isolated at school. If you have concerns about your child’s school attendance or punctuality please contact the school, through your child’s tutor in the first instance. I would like to thank you for your support in this matter and making sure your child is attending school regularly and are therefore benefiting fully from their educational opportunity.

Congratulations to our highest achievement point winners for last week, Riley year 7, Summer and Jack year 8, Maddie year 9, Archie year 10 and Hollie year 11. Well done to you all.

Have a lovely weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 15 March 2024

This week has seen some excellent successes for our students with the U15 girls football team winning the 6-a-side spring tournament and being runners up in the overall league. In basketball our boys Year 10 team won 5 out of 5 games with the basketball tournament at Medina on Tuesday, well done to Jordi who was named player of the tournament.

Our box of dreams winners this week in Year 11 were Ella and Jason, congratulations to you on some excellent revision in lessons.

We have noticed over the last couple of weeks that there has been an increase in students coming into school either wearing leggings or a hoodie. Neither of these items are permitted under our school uniform expectations. It is either school trousers or a school skirt. In terms of jumper it is a school jumper and blazer. If there are financial considerations to be taken into account, please can we ensure that parents contact the year offices to discuss.

We heard some excellent extra curricular news over the weekend, Megan in Year 7 competed in the Hampshire Country Grades for Gymnastics and placed first overall and now holds the title of Hampshire County Champion; well done Megan! It is lovely to be able to celebrate such success.

Well done also to our Year 11 students who completed their food tech practical exams this week and good look to our drama students for next Tuesday. We are busily compiling an offer of revision sessions over the Easter Holidays, so information will come out about this shortly.

A reminder that Year 9 pathways forms were due today. If these have not been returned, can they come in by Monday at the latest please.

Finally, I would like to congratulate our Hot Chocolate Friday winners: Cameron, Darryl, Charlie, Jacob, Finley, Ethan, Ryan, Sinan, Bailey and Sebastian. All achieved a golden ticket because they had 100% attendance in the last week or were the top achievement points holders in their year for the same period.

Have a lovely weekend.
