Psychology Talk from Solent University

Psychology Talk from Solent University

On Friday 24 November, key speakers Violet Gibson, Mei Mason Li and Craig Alison came to deliver a psychology talk from Solent University Southampton. Students were presented with an interactive presentation of how our cognitive perspective impacts individuals’ resilience and ability to overcome stress. Students were able to observe physiological changes in volunteers and given key techniques to help counter their stress response.

Students were very engaged asking questions about the body’s physiological response and were able to link their understanding to key areas already studied on the course, such as cognitive behavioural therapy and classical conditioning.

Students were able to gain further understanding of the role psychology has in numerous fields such as education, clinical and occupational psychology. The talk has inspired many to now consider a career in Psychology. Thank you to Solent University for this inspirational session.

Head of School’s Blog – 24 November 2023

Head of School’s Blog – 24 November 2023

Good luck to Year 13 as they start their trial exams, I’m sure all of your hard work and revision over the last few months will support you. You will need your lanyard as ID and will also need to follow all of the exam rules e.g. phone off and in bag, no watches…etc.

Exams can be stressful, so make sure you are looking after yourself:

– Sleep: have a regular and not too late bedtime, allow your brain to relax by giving your phone a rest.
– Diet: make sure you are eating well e.g. fresh food rather than processed.
– Exercise: set yourself a target, 5K steps, 10K steps, 30 minute cycle
– Connections: speak to friends and family.
– Mindful time: do things to help you relax, meditate, walk the dog, read.
– Journalling: write down how you are feeling / how your day went.
– Creativity: keep or start a new hobby.

You don’t need to do all of these, but it is good, sensible advice to aim towards.

Next week we are offering a day of taster lessons to Year 11 students on Thursday 30 November. Please make them feel welcome and make sure you are wearing your lanyard.

Have a restful weekend,

Mr Mumford

Head of School’s Blog – 24 November 2023

This week has been a busy time in school with Year 11 completing their mock exams. They have still got two more days next week, but their conduct this week has been really impressive, so well done!

Yesterday we hosted another Island Cross Country event, well done to all who participated and thank you to the students who helped to marshall this event.

Last weekend our Warhammer club entered the annual Armies on Parade competition at the Warhammer shop and they gained silver in the Youngblood category with Harry in Year 8 picking up Gold.

This morning I met with our Hot Chocolate golden ticket holders, well done to: Lucas, Owen, Cian, Lou, Tehya, Lacie, Charlotte and Archie. It was lovely to hear about your week and your thoughts on the school.

Next week, on Thursday 30 November, we will have a taster day for some of our Year 11 students at The Island VI form. This is a great opportunity and will assist with making post-16 choices.

Finally, can I take the opportunity to remind everyone in our community that vaping is not allowed in school or whilst in school uniform and could result in a suspension. It is illegal for students to be purchasing vapes and they can be highly damaging to students’ health. Can we please ensure we are re-iterating the dangers of vaping at home.

Have a lovely weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 24 November 2023

Attendance letters are going out today to those students whose attendance is less than 95%. We are currently running at 91.9% and have this week dropped below the national average. It was pleasing to see year 11 attendance increase this week – we hope that this improved attendance will continue after the exams. Being in school is important to your child’s achievement, wellbeing, and wider development.

Overall year 11’s behaviour and attitude have been amazing during their exams. Exams will continue into next week. Morning exams start at 9.00 am, students need to be lined up by 8.45 am. Thursday 30 November is the taster day for Year 11 students at The Island VI form. It is a good opportunity for them to find out if A levels are for them.

I have begun my meetings with Student Voice and am gaining invaluable opinions from students regarding their experience of Carisbrooke College. Students are being open and honest and it is a pleasure to speak to them.

Please remember that if your child would like to take part in the Santa Dash, we need the completed consent form returned to school as soon as possible. This is a fun run to Carisbrooke Castle to raise money for The Wight Brainy Bunch.

Our Federation School Panto will take place at Carisbrooke College on 5 and 6 December. If you would like to book tickets to the performance, you can do so using the Arbor App. We are also asking for donations of shop bought mince pies to offer the audience during the interval. If you would like to make a donation, please send your mince pies into school with your child and ask them to pass it to reception.

Congratulations on our top achievement point winners – year 7 Amelia, year 8 Amelie, year 9 Maddie, year 10 Xanda and year 11 Lucy and Lewis.

Have a good weekend.

Magistrates Talk

Magistrates Talk

Thank you very much to Rob Harris who came and spoke to criminology, law and sociology students this week about his role as a magistrate. He was very informative, telling us how the courts work, what punishment and other sentencing powers one has, how one trains to become a magistrate, providing us with local, regional and national figures and personal anecdotes.

Criminology students have to study the role of the lay person in the criminal justice system in depth, so to have Rob speak to the students about this really lifted it out from the book and brought it all to life! Rob definitely inspired some students to look into this vital and fascinating voluntary position in society.

Call It Out Campaign

Call it Out Campaign

Parents will have received a letter recently about a campaign we have launched in school called Call it out! You can read the full letter here.

This campaign aims to help tackle incidents of prejudicial language. Prejudicial language is when a person uses words that attack one of the core protected characteristics in society. These are characteristics such as gender, race, religion, sexuality and physical or emotional conditions.

If students experience any form of prejudicial language being used in school, we are urging them to Call it out! They can do this by speaking to a member of staff or by sending an email to callitoutMC@iwef.org.uk. This does not replace the preferred way of raising concerns by talking to tutors, teachers or other staff; this is purely an extra mechanism that can be used, should a student feel more comfortable doing this.

Year 7 Kindness Breakfast

Year 7 Kindness Breakfast

A Kindness Breakfast was held last week for 30 students in year 7 with Mrs Lythgoe and Miss Bracegirdle. These students completed the kindness bingo which saw them carrying out tasks such as volunteering, helping others in class and offering to help with chores.

They were served croissants, pan au chocolate, fresh fruit, pancakes, toast, crumpets, and fruit juices. It was great to recognise the efforts of these students and celebrate how wonderful it is to show kindness to each other.

Well done to all of you that were invited and we will continue to look out for acts of kindness in the coming term. Year 7 have created a lovely, caring and kind community and we are very proud to lead your year group.

Mrs Lythgoe and Miss Bracegirdle

Criminology Guest Speaker – Zoe’s Law

Criminology Guest Speaker – Zoe’s Law

On Wednesday 16 November, Charlie Panayi visited year 12 Criminology students to deliver a talk and answer questions on developing and running a campaign for change. As this is something students are asked to do for one of their main assessments, this was a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge and advice from somebody with real life experience of undertaking the task.

Charlie outlined the purpose of Zoe’s Law, a campaign that he along with other family and friends of Zoe Panayi launched to call for a change in law to make the testing of moles that have been removed compulsory.
The students were mature and engaged during the talk – asking questions around funding and methods of campaigning. Feedback from them has been overwhelmingly positive and they have very much appreciated the real life experience being discussed with them. Thank you very much to Charlie for giving his time to support our students’ understanding of this topic.

Geology Fieldwork in the Lake District

Geology Fieldwork in the Lake District

A level geology students at The Island VI Form have recently completed a week long residential, 350 miles north of the Isle of Wight, investigating the geology of the Lake District.

On their first day, with an igneous rocks focus, the students and geology Teachers, Simon Lloyd and Vix Lowthion, went out suited and booted in all the waterproofs to focus on the Borrowdale Volcanic group. First to Derwentwater and the jointed dolerite outcrop at Castle Head, then to the green volcanic slates of Honister Slate Mine (including hot chocolate and souvenirs) and finally the immense andesitic 2,000 ton Bowder stone.

As the week went on, wellies were essential – students walked through the rain and through swollen streams up to the granite intrusion at Sinen Gill and identified andalusite slates, coralite and sillimanite minerals and finally the high grade hornfels.

Day four and five saw a focus on sedimentary rocks and geochronology. They visited Cowraik Quarry Nature Reserve and completed some field sketches, micro studies and measurements of the dips and strikes of the Permian sanddunes there. They then travelled to the A6 Shap road cutting with 8 limb folds of slates and greywacke right next to the traffic. More sketches and dips and strikes. It was cold in Shap!

On the final morning – finally with blue skies and sunshine – they went to Schoolhouse Quarry to investigate the geochronology of events recorded in the rocks. They discovered folding, faulting and even a sill intruding through the beds.

This was a wonderful trip for the students and was well supported by Pippa from the Field Studies Council at Blencathra. Thank you to the staff accompanying the trip for their excellent organisation and for enabling this hands-on experience for the students. Next stop – mock exams!
