Sports Hall Athletics Championships

Sports Hall Athletics Competition

On Wednesday afternoon, a group of year 8 students headed over to Medina to compete in the Island Schools Sports Hall Athletics Competition, whereby our team of 5 boys and 6 girls took on 5 athletic events each.

The students performed well across each field event, with stand out performances in the speed bounce which saw Euan take 1st position with 76 bounces in 30 seconds. Taylor also put in a commendable effort with 68 in the girls competition. In the triple jump Lucy gained a PB with 4.98m and Destiny just behind with 4.88m. In the shot put Freya got 6.30m. Benji and Theo also performed well in the vertical jump coming in the top 5.

On the track events, the boys put in a superb effort on the obstacle race which saw them dominate and this was followed up by excellent performances in the 2 lap race by Euan and Jack with both gaining a 2nd place. Jack also gained a second in the 4 lap race.

Theo also inspired others with his excellent motivational coaching from the sideline and also through his strategic conversations with officials.

Overall, an excellent performance by team Carisbrooke!

Indoor Rowing Championship

Indoor Rowing Championship

On Thursday 17th February, it was the annual Indoor Rowing Championship at The Bay Secondary School. This is the 9th year straight that Carisbrooke have been part of this. They previously came 6th in 2013 followed by third in 2014 and back to back runners up positions in 2015 and 2016. In 2017 the Carisbrooke Blades were crowned champions and became the first school to take the championship away from The Bay who have always dominated the event. In 2018, Carisbrooke went back to runners up and in 2019 came in third followed by 4th place overall in the last event in 2020. Therefore, the Carisbrooke side were ready to start a new era and were aiming for a top three spot this year. On the day a few last minute changes occurred to the roster which couldn’t be helped but the team still managed to put in some excellent performances and whilst they finished 4th overall slightly below target they did themselves and the school proud.

In year 7 Lincoln, River, Tayler, Beau and Tiff performed well in their first outing for us. Lincoln and Tiff both gained second place in their endurance events and Lincoln also followed this up with a 2nd in the sprint. In the relay they gain a 3rd overall and so they should all be very proud of themselves. In year 8, Bethan gained a second in the endurance and Logan came from fourth at the beginning of the race to win his individual event thanks to some amazing pacing from him. Logan would have backed this performance up in the sprint but unfortunately, a mechanical failure prevented this from happening. In year 9 Harriet took 1st place in the endurance event and 2nd in the sprint and this outstanding performance was backed up by Kian in the sprint who also gained 2nd. The year 9 team then went on to win the relay and final event of the day with a classy and well polished performance. In year 10 both Emily and Tom gained 2nd placed in the endurance event and Emily backed this up with a 2nd in the sprint alongside Seb who also gained 2nd. In the relay they also gained 2nd overall to finish a very consistent performance. In year 11, Amy stood head and shoulders above the rest gaining a 2nd in the sprint and a 1st in the endurance which was also backed up by Oakley with a 2nd in the endurance.

Every student who took part for Carisbrooke pushed themselves to the limit in this very intense and exposed situation and this demonstrates a real brilliance physically and strength mentally. Both Mr Fleming and Mr Peake are very proud of them all.

Well done!

Head of School’s Blog – 11 February 2022

11 February 2022

It does not seem possible that we have just one more week of the half term left!

Assemblies and PSHE lessons this week have been themed around Mental Health Awareness week. A huge thank you to the staff who have delivered these. Next week I am looking forward to our celebration assemblies. Our students have worked hard this half term and it is a pleasure to reward them.

We had an artist in school this week working with our students in a “Mark Making” workshop. I was fortunate enough to visit the year 11 group whilst they were working with her. Some of their creations were very interesting and very powerful. You can read more about this in the Biosphere Blog below.

Pantomime rehearsals are back up and running afterschool. It is lovely to see the students so excited and committed to the performance. I am very much looking forward to the evening performance on Tuesday 29th March.

Don’t forget to get your appointments made for the year 11 parents evening next Thursday.

Although the political message around COVID-19 is beginning to change, it is important that we continue to follow the current guidance. Anyone with symptoms needs to isolate and arrange a PCR test. Anyone who tests positive on an Asymptomatic LFD test also need to isolate and follow the Government guidance. Good hand and respiratory hygiene continue to be important.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week. Year 7 Tilly S, Year 8 Jack F, Year 9 Izzy B and Harry M, Year 10 Jude M and Year 11 Rhiannon S and Selina W

Have a lovely weekend.

Biosphere Blog – 11 February 2022

‘This week we have had lots of fun exploring mark making using natural materials. All the materials were collected in the biosphere along the old railways of Brading marshes. It is great to be able to introduce the students to different ways of working and using natural materials in their work’.

Trudie Wilson, Artist in Residence

It was a real joy to see so many students engaging with the workshops this week. Classes had the opportunity to explore the ways in which our Biosphere can inspire us and allow us to create beautiful marks. We were all so impressed to see how students worked collaboratively and stepped out of their comfort zone to allow them to respond in a more abstract manner than what they are used to.

University of Southampton Visit

University of Southampton Visit

25 Year 8 students from Carisbrooke College attended their first University visit on the Learn with Us programme. The University of Southampton were super excited to have us!

We had a great day learning about University life, touring the campus and looking at the different courses available. Students created a poster and presented it to the rest of the group, followed by a game of ‘The Chase’ which was an interactive game, answering questions on what they had learnt throughout their visit.

The students had a fantastic day, making memories and starting to think about what their futures could look like.

Speak Out Challenge

Speak Out Challenge

Last week, we had the Speakers Trust in to complete a workshop with a group of Year 9 students. The workshop was an opportunity for students to learn and build on skills that they require to speak out in front of their peers. The aim of the workshop was to build confidence and give students the awareness of the skills required to speak out as well as preparing for future speaking and listening exams that they will complete.

I was immensely proud of how the students conducted themselves, pushed themselves out of their comfort zone but were always willing to attempt the challenges, even if they were unsure!

We learnt so much about each other and I witnessed those who may not have chosen to work together, build relationships, rapport and respect for one another.

Basketball at Carisbrooke

Return to Basketball Matches at Carisbrooke College

Over the last few weeks, Carisbrooke have been participating in their first basketball games since before the pandemic prevented such games from taking place.  However, despite such a long time passing, the students have represented Carisbrooke with pride and performed very well throughout these games.

After losing the first few games to sides from The Bay and Christ the King College, Carisbrooke were able to achieve their first victory against Christ the King in a year 8/9 fixture.

There have been some outstanding individual performances throughout these games with Oakley (year 11), Alfie (year 10), Charlie (year 9), Matthew (year 8) and Shai (year 7) being just some of these.

All sides are preparing for the competitive tournaments that will be taking place in March next term and any students wishing to play for the school teams simply need to attend training on a Tuesday lunch time or after school.

Head of School’s Blog – 4 February 2022

4 February 2022

I am pleased to let you know that our website is now up and running following the cyber attack and we are able to return to publishing e-newsletters. The website once again lets you see our latest news stories and general information more easily. Please take the time to have a look.

I had the pleasure of going to watch the Isle of Wight Education Federation Dance Live performance at the Portsmouth Guildhall last night. They were amazing and came away runners up. These were the first of the heats so we will have to wait and see if their performance was good enough to make the Final – I believe they deserve it from what I saw (not biased at all!). This was a truly federative entry with students working together from Carisbrooke, Medina and The Island VI Form. A huge thank you to Mrs Tuck, Mr Williams, Mrs Lythgoe, Mrs Hookey and Mrs McCarthy for the support they gave them in making it possible!

We ran our Year 11 trial results assembly yesterday, and I am sure most of them will have shared their results with you. I had some interesting conversations with a few of our year 11 students. Some were really pleased, others a little disappointed, but as we said to them in assembly, there is still time to improve the results. There will be lots of opportunities in lessons,  after school and during the half term holidays for them to get support. A gentle reminder to year 11 parents – don’t forget to book in for the Parents’ Evening on Thursday 17 February. If you are having any problems please contact Mrs Hookey.

Year 9 basketball team was outstanding, playing against Christ The King this week.  Charlie  seemed to never miss the net, Louie was a mountain in defence, Kian, Toby, Alfie and Ashton never stood still, running the length and width of the court.  These students were ably supported by some of our year 8 superstars.  The final score was an impressive 36 points to Christ the King’s 6 points.  Well done team for dominating throughout.

Some year 9 students have had the opportunity to take part in a ‘Speak Out’ workshop run by the Speakers Trust this week. This was to support them with building confidence in speaking in front of their peers, groups and public speaking. Talking to them, they found it really helpful.

COVID-19 is still prevalent with a number of students off at the moment. Can we encourage you to use the lateral flow tests or if your child has symptoms please isolate them and arrange a PCR test. If they do test positive, please keep them at home and follow the Government guidance on isolation.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week. Year 7 Freddie H, Year 8 Jack A, Year 9 Izzy B, Year 10 Jordan P and Year 11 Sam I.

Have a lovely weekend

Head of School’s Blog – 28 January 2022

28 January 2022

The school nurses will be in on Tuesday 1 February. They will be administering the second round of covid vaccinations as well as the first for those who were unable to have it last time. Please can consent forms be handed to their tutors or heads of year.

I am really looking forward to going over to watch our federated Dance Live! team competing at the Portsmouth Guildhall. They have been working really hard practicing their routines at Carisbrooke during lunch times and then going over to Medina every week to work with the Medina students. I have no doubts that they will be amazing!

On Thursday, year 11’s will have a trial results day. This will be part of an assembly that will inform them on how they need to use their trial results to prepare for the summer exams. They will receive an envelope with their trial results grades. This is a grade that their teacher is giving them based on their trial exam and work in class. This is not a final predicted grade. Tutors, subject staff, and senior leaders will all be supporting this process. The clock is ticking but there is still sufficient time for students to improve on these grades.

There is a Year 11 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 17 February, where you will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns that you have with the subject staff. This will be done virtually.

As you will be aware the Government officially changed their guidance relating to face coverings and has eased restrictions. We are encouraging students and staff to be supportive of each other and if they wish to wear a face covering, they should carry on doing so. Please be assured that we do monitor the number of positive cases of COVID-19 in school and we do have the ability under contingency planning to re-introduce measures if we need to. It is really important that we continue to hand

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week. Year 7 River S, Year 8 Freddie H, Year 9 Olivia S, Year 10 Trev F and Year 11 Ruby H.
