Head of School’s Blog – 30 September 2022

Dear Parents/Students

Year 13 students need to start planning their revision for the Trial exams that are taking place from Monday 21 November. I have asked staff to ensure that students know which parts of the syllabus will be examined during these exams, if you don’t know please ask your teachers. There will be study leave for the duration of the exam period (except vocational/art subjects – please ask your teacher what their expectations are regarding attendance to lessons).

The Year 12 focus this week is starting to think about building your ‘Career Capital’. What examples do you have of: problem solving, work ethic, entrepreneurial thinking, verbal / written communication, resilience, leadership and teamwork?

In Friday’s assembly we advertised opportunities to improve your experiences by participating in:

Young Enterprise – https://www.young- enterprise.org.uk/
Mock Legal Trial – http://smartlaw.org.uk/ mock-trials/bar-mock-trials- teachers-2/
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – https://iwef.org.uk/ iwef/duke-of-edinburghs-award/

You get back what you put into your VI Form. Part of us treating you like an adult is giving you opportunities, but you have to show leadership in yourself and take them up.

Head of School’s Blog – 30 September 2022

Welcome to my update for this week.

Some of our Year 7 students have had the opportunity to take part in our ‘Literacy week’ activity. They have been learning about Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ in an immersive, innovative and interactive way. Activities have included trips to the beach and local woodlands. They have created artwork, musical responses and physical performances based on The Tempest whilst also gaining an appreciation of the text. The project has encouraged the students to enjoy a text that they may have otherwise found daunting.

As mentioned last week, I will be covering aspects of our Vision and Values in future updates.

‘ASPIRE and Achieve’ is integral to us as a school and a Federation. As our vision explains, ‘We are a learning community which embraces opportunities for our learners by securing high quality learning and teaching. We aim for our students to achieve their potential both as students at our schools and as global citizens’

Ambition is the first aspect of ASPIRE and this explores that ‘we are ambitious for ourselves and our futures’. Having ambition is so important. This can involve short, medium and long term goals, but the key is to always have something that you would like to achieve or experience. When you achieve one of your short term ambitions, keep working hard towards achieving your longer term ones. We can all have knock backs or challenges along the way, but determination and self belief will create resilience, which will mean ambitions do not need to change, they just need to be worked for

Next week, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday our Year 7 students will be sitting CATs (Cognitive Abilities Tests). This involves three tests over the three days. There is nothing to worry about. No revision or prior learning is required. They are tests that help us to understand learning styles and highlight potential difficulties that students may be facing.

Year 7 parents will shortly be receiving an invite to Year 7 Tutor Evening. This will give parents’/carers the opportunity to discuss how their child is settling into secondary school life.

Our extra curricular activities for all year groups have been shared on our social media platforms this week, so please do follow us on one of these to keep up to date with all of the wonderful opportunities we have on offer.

Please see my separate update in relation to the IWEF/HISP consultation that ran prior to the summer break.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Welcome to this week’s newsletter which is full of information regarding our extra curricular activities for all year groups. This information has also been shared on our social media platforms this week, please follow us on one of these to keep up to date with all of the interesting activities we have on offer.

At our Open Evening on Tuesday, we opened our doors to the year 6 students on the island and their parents/carers. I would like to say a huge thank you to our staff who were on hand to talk to our visitors and to all our fabulous students who helped on the evening as tour guides or in the classrooms demonstrating lessons, I was extremely proud of you all. The feedback we have received from parents/carers is excellent with regards to the information on the evening from both staff and student helpers. The deadline for applications is 31 October. If anyone was not able to attend and would like to see the school they can contact reception to book an alternative visit.

On Wednesday, all our students had their individual photos taken and details of how you can purchase these will be sent out in the next couple of weeks. I was very pleased with the students as they were well behaved for the photographers and made the process quick and easy.

Year 7 parents will shortly be receiving an invitation to the Year 7 Tutor Evening. This will give parents/carers the opportunity to discuss how their child is settling into secondary school life.

Please see a separate update from the Executive Headteacher, Mr Parr-Burman, regarding the IWEF/HISP consultation that ran prior to the summer break.

Have a lovely weekend.

Year 10 Boys Football Match Reports

Year 10 Boys Football Match Reports

Hampshire Cup v Springfield School Portsmouth

Medina College travelled over to Portsmouth on Monday to Springfield School for the 1st round of the Hampshire cup.

In a hostile environment Medina played with aggression and tactical awareness to overcome a stubborn Springfield side. Medina produced their best performance of the season winning 5-1 with Kai scoring 1 and Will scoring 4.

Medina v The Bay

On Wednesday afternoon Medina played again, this time at home against a strong Bay side. It was another fantastic performance by the whole team. Some brilliant football was played throughout the game and Medina ended up winning 8-1, with Luca scoring 1 goal and Will scoring 7.

An amazing week for the whole team and a brilliant week for Will who scored a total of 11 goals over two games! Well done all, Mr Dye was very pleased with the results!

Former student takes part in The Queen’s State Funeral Procession

Former Student takes part in The Queen’s State Funeral Procession

This week we received news that one of our former students, Marcellino Mamo, took part in The Queen’s State Funeral procession. Marcellino, who is now 20 years old, is a Mine Warfare Specialist in the Royal Navy.

The Royal Navy played a crucial role in the procession that followed the State Funeral service. More than 130 of their sailors had the honour of pulling the State Ceremonial Gun Carriage bearing the Queen’s coffin for 2 miles through London. The Royal Navy confirmed, on their official website, that 98 sailors would haul the two-and-a-half-ton ceremonial carriage, while a further 40 sailors would march behind the vehicle acting as brakes.

The role that the Royal Navy carry out during State Funeral processions has been a tradition since 1901 when they stepped in to pull the State Ceremonial Gun Carriage which was bearing Queen Victoria’s coffin at the time.

We are extremely proud of everything that Marcellino has achieved since leaving our school and wish him all the best for the future.

Head of School’s Blog – 23 September 2022

23 September 2022

Thank you for your support and understanding during the first two weeks, where our newsletter needed to reflect the period of National Mourning.

I am pleased to welcome you properly to this academic year.

This week we had the pleasure of inviting Year 6 students and their parents/carers to our Open Evening. It was a fantastic event which was very well attended. Our visitors had the opportunity to hear about our Medina learning community, experience first hand some learning activities and also speak to our amazing students about their experience of our school. I was delighted to welcome everyone who attended and felt extremely proud of all of the students and staff for the opportunities and information they provided. Applications need to be made by 31 October to provide the best chance of having a place with us in September. If anyone was unable to attend, please contact reception to arrange an alternative opportunity.

We have a plethora of extra-curricular activities available this year. A timetable is being put together and will be available for all to see via our social media and website. If you do not already follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, please do, as there are regular updates and good news stories shared in this way. Information will also be shared about Google Classroom and our parent portal over the coming weeks.

During the first couple of days, I delivered assemblies welcoming the students back and revisiting our expectations. As a reminder, we do expect students to be on time at the start of the day and in full school uniform. Students need to use their break times appropriately and make sure they do not need to leave the classroom during lessons. They also need to remain focussed, have good manners and behave appropriately by following the rules. We will apply the rules consistently and our expectations will not drop as time goes on.

Next Thursday we will be having our school photos, so it will be especially important that all uniform is spot on. If you do have any concerns about the start of term, please contact your child’s tutor in the first instance.

Next week I will be starting to cover our core ASPIRE values which are Ambition, Success, Progress, Inspiration, Respect and Equality, as these are integral to us as a school and as a Federation.

Best wishes

23 September 2022

Thank you for your support and understanding during the first two weeks, where our newsletter needed to reflect the period of National Mourning.

I can’t believe that we are already three weeks into the new term. We have had a very positive start to the academic year and students have returned with a positive attitude. I have been very impressed with the engagement in learning that I have seen whilst walking around and popping into lessons. Our new year 7 cohort have started well and are already getting involved in Carisbrooke life.

I had the pleasure of leading the year groups’ first assemblies where I revisited our expectations – students need to be on time, in full uniform and ready to engage in their learning. As you know, our core values are built around ASPIRE which are Ambition, Success, Progress, Inspirations, Respect and Equality. Students have been putting together their individual tutor charters and creating a display about what Aspire and Achieve means to them and to us as a college.

Rehearsals are well underway for a number of events that are coming up: Dance Live! and our IWEF Christmas performance. It has been great to see so many students take up these opportunities. You can read more about this further in the newsletter.

A timetable is being put together of all our extra-curricular activities and will be available for all to see via our social media and website. If you do not already follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, please do, as there are regular updates and good news stories shared on these platforms. Information will also be shared about Google Classroom and our parent portal over the coming weeks.

Next week we have the pleasure of opening our doors to the year 6 students and parents/carers at our Open Evening. I know a large number of our students are going to be around that night working with departments and acting as guides. They are our best ambassadors as they can share their experiences of life at Carisbrooke.

Next week on Wednesday we will have a photographer in school taking individual photos of students. These will be available for parents/carers to purchase and further details will follow.

Have a lovely weekend.
