Music Celebration Assemblies

We enjoyed a week of Music Celebration Assemblies at Carisbrooke College this week, with students from years 7-10 taking part and performing songs they have been rehearsing in lessons and at our School of Rock and Sing music clubs too.

Performing in front of hundreds of people at the IOW Festival is one thing, but performing in front of your peers takes a HUGE amount of encouragement and confidence – well done to everyone involved!

We love to celebrate musical talent and opportunities here at Carisbrooke so please speak to Mrs Peckham if you would like to get involved in any of our musical activities or perform in any future events or Year Assemblies.

Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition

Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition

The postponed year 9 DofE Award Bronze final expedition went ahead on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 June. The seven students hiked around the Island covering 15km each day. Students planned, trained and organised themselves over the previous few weeks.

The expedition took a few twists and turns with the students getting a little lost at first. However, they corrected their mistakes and found their way. Everyone had a very enjoyable time in the sunny weather.

Students will now be aiming to complete their award by completing their volunteering, physical and skill sections. We are hoping that the students will continue onto the Silver Award next year.

Well done to all involved! It was a great couple of days and a pleasure to spend the time with the students in the great outdoors.

Students perform on the Kidzone Stage at the IW Festival!

48 students from Carisbrooke College, Medina College and The Island VI Form had the amazing opportunity of performing at this year’s IW Festival!

Music has been very hard hit by the impact of covid, with singing and ensembles only this year being allowed to form, but our students have rehearsed endlessly and shown incredible effort and enthusiasm in putting these performances together and gathering the confidence needed to stand up in front of a field full of people cheering them on.

Students performed on the Kidzone stage at various times over the weekend, and had the unique opportunity to see first hand how stage managers and sound technicians operate, learning all about set logistics, scheduling, soundchecks and life backstage.

Carisbrooke’s Key Stage 3 choir ‘Sing’ performed hits by Coldplay and Ed Sheeran. Various bands and ensembles from Carisbrooke College’s popular ‘School of Rock’ club performed a variety of songs they had all chosen themselves, ranging from Queen to Green Day. Medina College’s year 10 group ‘The Antiband’ performed hits by The Beatles and year 11s from Medina joined with students from The Island VI Form to lead a lively closing set on Saturday afternoon.

We are incredibly proud of these students. The time and energy invested by them in this event is highly commendable. We look forward to seeing our musical project at the IW Festival go from strength to strength in the coming years.

Southampton University Global Challenge

Southampton University Global Challenge

On Tuesday, 14 June, we took a group of year 10 students from Carisbrooke College and Medina College to Southampton University to take part in a global challenge.

This was a debating challenge in which Medina’s A Team came 3rd out of 9 schools; a massive achievement.

The students worked hard on their research, presentation and debating skills all day and were a credit to both their schools and our Federation. They remained engaged, focused and perfectly behaved all day. Well done!

Biosphere Blog – 24 June 2022

We are very excited to announce that we are now at the next stage of our Biosphere Project.

On Tuesday 22 June we took delivery of a rather large piece of stone that will be turned into an incredible sculpture to form the legacy piece of our project. We are hoping that both students and staff across the Federation will have the opportunity to make their mark on this sculpture, working closely with our Artist in Residence to capture elements of the beautiful biosphere reserve in which we all live.

We would like to extend our thanks to both George Jenkins and Geoff Banks who have very kindly sponsored the outcome of this project.

Year 8 Inter-Tutor Football

Year 8 Inter-Tutor Football

In the scorching summer heat the four tutor groups battled it out, with some amazing football skills and real teamwork. For the first leg 8A were up against 8B and this round finished with 8B winning 2-0. Meanwhile, 8C were battling it out against 8D and the score finished 1-0 to 8C.

The winners from each round played each other,so 8C were up against 8B, and the final score was 2-0 to 8C. Meanwhile 8A & 8D were playing off for their final positions in the competition. This was a tense game, and ended at 0-0. A penalty shoot out finished the match, with 8A leading over 8D.

Final Positions:
1st – 8C
2nd – 8B
3rd – 8A
4th – 8D

Very well done to everyone that took part! We look forward to more competitions next year!

Farewell to Miss Ban!

Farewell to Miss Ban!

Unfortunately, the time has come for staff and students at Carisbrooke College to say goodbye to Miss Ban – our wonderful Chinese language assistant.

After joining us last September, Miss Ban has spent the year helping students in all year groups with their Mandarin studies. She has worked in both KS3 and KS4 classes and has proved invaluable in every lesson she has been in. She was of particular assistance to the year 11s in the lead up to their GCSE spoken and written exams, offering help with both vocabulary and grammar and providing essential feedback to each of them.

Despite her calm and quiet personality, Miss Ban commands respect and many students have benefitted immensely this year from her reliability and professionalism. Although next week will be her last here with us before she returns to China, everyone at Carisbrooke hopes she’ll stay in touch with us for many years to come.

Thank you for all your hard work this year, Josie, and we wish you all the best with whatever comes next.

Year 11’s Final Assembly

Year 11’s Final Assembly

On Thursday morning we said an emotional farewell to our year 11 students in their final assembly.

Miss Begley, Mr Peake, Miss Bracegirdle and Mrs Hookey all gave speeches, as well as the four Tutors. Students also spoke about these staff who have played a particularly significant role in their time at Carisbrooke College.

Awards were presented for the final time for each subject area and each tutor group. Finally, students watched a video put together by staff who had messages of good luck and thanks to the students and a second video which was a montage of images of the students’ last five years.

After shirt signing and many selfies, the students departed at lunch time. They would have had a treat from the ice cream van but, due to time restraints, this will now happen on Monday 20 June after the students’ exam.

Thank you to the staff involved in putting this final assembly together to make it a special event for the students.

We have been asked by the Local Authority Transport Department to share the following information regarding the Privilege Seat Application Window for the Academic Year 2022/23.

Privilege Seat Application Window – Academic Year 2022/23

Dear Parent/Guardian

The dates for the privilege seat application window for academic year 2022 have been finalised. Should you wish to apply for a privilege seat for your child to use the school bus service you will need to apply between 9am on Monday 27 June 2022 and 4 pm on Friday 8 July 2022 for children in school years 0 – 11, only. You will not be able to apply for privilege seats for sixth form students (school years 12 – 14) at this time. Please note that the online form will only be live between the above times and that applications received outside of this window will not be accepted.

Please also note the FAQs, Code of Good Practice and Ticket Terms and Conditions sections available via this webpage. If you scroll to the bottom of the above webpage you will see the bus services for which you can apply. This information will be live from 9 am on Monday 27 June 2022. Should the service you require not be listed you will not be able to apply for that service at this time.

Do bear in mind that making an application for a privilege seat does not guarantee a seat on the school bus.

Privilege seat ticket prices are set costs as follows.
– Up to a full term £130.00
– Up to half a term £65.00
– Up to a full term AM or PM only £65.00
– Up to half a term AM or PM only £32.50

Important Points to Note
– There will only be 1 application window before the start of the academic year so please ensure you apply during this
window for your child to be considered for a seat.
– Information on bus services that can be offered will be available on the website from 9am on Monday 27 June 2022.
– We may not be able to provide an update on the number of seats available before the application window opens but
please be aware seats availability will be very limited.
– There is be a strict payment deadline for making payment. Should you miss this deadline, the seat offered to your child
will be offered to the next child on the waiting list (should one exist) and your application will be cancelled.
– Once applications have been processed by the Transport Team you will be able to see the status of your application online as well as make payment without having to contact the Council.

Year 7 Boys Cricket

Year 7 Boys Cricket

In case you are wondering why there has not been a recent Avengers film released, it is because they have been hiding out in our year 7s. Yesterday our Avengers took on The Island Free School in a year 7 boys cricket match. As it was a straight knock out competition the pressure was on, especially considering they were playing away on a very narrow and uneven surface which the home side practised daily on. However, this did not seem to impact on our Captain America (Daniel P), who after winning the toss went against the norm and elected to field first.

Like all good captains, Daniel opened the bowling and was supported by Iron Man (Wilfie), who with his lazer precise bowling accuracy made it very difficult for the home team to get going. As the home team began to find their way into the game, the strength and unity of the Avengers eventually took its toll on them. With Arrow (Shai), who from an impossible angle, fired the ball in from a distance to hit the only stump he could see in order to runout the opening batsman. With the Hulk (Lincoln) bowling perfectly to frustrate them further, the home team stuttered in building a big score. With Thor (Charlie) bringing the hammer down behind the wicket to stop anything from going past him and Black Panther (Liam) throwing himself all over the pitch to stop anything from going past him. Whilst contributing with consistent and well pitched bowling, the home team just couldn’t see a way past. When Dr Strange (Jack) got in on the action bowling almost a perfect over and making some impossible stops in the field when backing up, the home team just couldn’t comprehend the magic he could produce. When Spiderman (Max) appeared, it was pretty much time for the white flag to come out for the home team thanks again to some quality fielding and bowling.

With 84 runs on the board, The Hulk and Captain America came out to bat and you could literally see Nick Fury (Mr Fleming) on the boundary smiling with confidence. Daniel brought his shield out early hitting multiple quick runs and with Lincoln down the other end shouting Hulk Smash (best line ever) and the score went up quickly for the Avengers. With the game turning ever one sided, Captain America hit boundary after boundary and as players have to retire on 25, he waited until he was on 24 to smash a 6 out of the galaxy. With Hulk starting to strike out more and Black Panther darting between the stumps after stylish shots, the score continued to drive up. Even once Hulk was runout, Arrow came to the crease with some big hits over the top of the fielders. With one over left, Arrow retired to allow Dr Strange the opportunity to come and take us to the multiverse of champions.

The Avengers eventually won with 6 wickets in hand and four overs to spare.
