Head of School’s Blog – 4 November 2022

4 November 2022

Welcome to the first newsletter of this half term.

I would like to start by saying that we had a very successful VI Form Open Evening at our dedicated post 16 site yesterday evening. Thank you to all students and parents/carers who attended. We hope you found it useful having an opportunity to talk to the wide selection of subject staff and our amazing students, as well as enjoying a look around our ever improving building and facilities. If you were unable to attend then please have a look at our website which has the prospectus available to view, and the application form to download. We also have subject related videos available for you to watch with messages from our staff. If you would like to arrange a tour of the site or have any queries at all, please contact us at viform@iwef.org.uk.

I led assemblies on one of our core values, Equality, this week. I covered topics such as protected characteristics, unfairness/injustice, discrimination and prejudice. This is an important area and it is vital that all of our young people understand these terms and behaviours so that they become informed rounded young adults.

Next week we will be acknowledging the two minute silence at 11.00 on Friday 11 November. We will update you about this in the newsletter next week.

Although Year 11 trial exams and the summer exams may seem an eternity away, they are not. Year 11 students need to be ensuring that they are giving themselves every opportunity to learn as much as possible in lessons and then complete their homework and further independent learning at home. The message to Year 11 is that they are in control of their futures, their results will be a reflection of their efforts. There is still a good amount of time to make any changes to their approach to their learning. There is a Year 11 Careers Evening on Tuesday, 15 November. It will be an important evening, full of information about next steps and what is needed to get there.

Many of our students enjoyed a Trip to the Mayflower Theatre yesterday to watch ‘An Inspector Calls’. We hope that they all enjoyed it and found it useful as another way to interpret their English text.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Wicked Trip!

Wicked Trip!

On Wednesday Key Stage 4 Music and Drama students from both Carisbrooke College and Medina College travelled to London, to see the musical ‘Wicked’ at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London!

The show features one of our GCSE Music set works ‘Defying Gravity’ so provided valuable context and experience to those students studying this piece, and more broadly offered a fantastic opportunity for all our students to see a professional live stage production.

Our students behaviour was impeccable and we had lovely comments from members of the public.

Bronze and Silver DofE Expeditions October 2022

Bronze and Silver DofE Expeditions October 2022

On the first weekend of half term, when many staff and students were enjoying the start of the holiday, twenty four students and four staff were gearing up for a weekend of hiking around the Island as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

The students endured torrid weather conditions. We had one year 10 team and a mixed year 10/11 team from Medina College as well as a year 11 team from Carisbrooke College.

The intention of the expedition section of the DofE award is to give participants a chance to learn and use skills such as map reading, route planning, preparing and cooking a meal, first aid (to learn but hopefully not needed), time management and the country code. This is all done whilst learning to work well as a team, improving personal fitness and developing stamina.

Day one saw the explorers walk along the Tennyson trail and across to Brighstone Forest giving them some much needed shelter from the wind before continuing onto Calbourne Mill where they were ferried back to school. A few groups got lost in the forest but soon managed to find their way through.

Day two started at Calbourne Mill. The students took in the sights from the long stone before heading down to Tapnell Farm, crossing the middle road before climbing Compton Down and Westover Down to return to Calbourne Mill. Most of the groups managed to cover almost 20km during the day whilst one member of a group took a particular liking to a cow pat.

Day three, the Carisbrooke group braved the heavy rain for their final day. Starting at the Island VI Form they soldiered through the rain along the old railway line out to Newbridge before finishing at Calbourne Mill.

At the end, students gave feedback about something that they enjoyed and something that they learnt. The most popular elements of the weekend that students enjoyed were the cooking, the views, being in nature and playing games with others. In addition to the skills learnt, students also reported that they had learnt a fun-fact about a team-mate; got to know others from their year group better and learnt to never give up and trust in themselves more.

Congratulations to all students involved. A huge thank you to Mr Burnett, Miss Young and Miss Bryan as well as Ms Ryan and Mrs O’Callaghan for being our home based contact.

Mr Norman

Head of School’s Blog – 21 October 2022

21 October 2022

Welcome to the final newsletter of this first autumn half term.

I would like to start by thanking all parents/carers for your support this half term. The students have settled in very well and are focusing on their learning.

We have started this year with an excellent mix of learning opportunities. Our classroom learning is more focused and the expectation on making progress in every single lesson is evident. We have had many opportunities for delivery of the curriculum outside of the classroom on trips, including The Globe in London, beach visits on the Island for Geography fieldwork, visits to a local farm for the Agriculture iGCSE , and there are many more to come in the next half term. We also have our extra-curricular offer which is now extensive and has included our Year 7 boys football team winning the Island Schools League, many many other sporting events and competitions, rehearsals for Dance Live, rehearsals for our federation production nearer the end of next term, ‘Wendy and Peter’, D of E, cypher club, astronomy club, to name a few. Next half term will bring more experiences and possibilities.

The Island VI Form, our federated VI Form provision based in the the centre of Newport has its Open Evening on Thursday 3 November. This is an opportunity for Year 11 students to have a look at the facilities, talk to staff and students about the subjects on offer and begin to explore what is on offer to them for when they move on to the next part of the educational journey. Please have a look at the website for more details, and also set between 5.00 pm and 8.00 pm aside to visit us.

I will be leading assemblies on the ‘Equality’ part of our ASPIRE values during the first week back after half term. I will update you regarding the key message that the students receive in the next newsletter.

Please remember that next week is half term and that we have a development day on Monday 31 October, so we expect to see students back at school, on time, in full uniform and ready to learn on Tuesday 1 November.

Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) Group

Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) Group

A group of students from years 8 and 9 recently attended the inaugural Isle of Wight meeting of the Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA)  group at Christ the King College.  EARA was created by a school on the mainland to “Challenge the way both students and teachers think and view our world and our fellow inhabitants and aspire to reduce the discrimination that students of different groups face at school, whether it be down to their race, sexuality, appearance or lifestyle”.

The EARA group addresses many of the nine characteristics protected under the Equalities Act of 2010. They consider how prejudicial attitudes and behaviours towards those who share those characteristics impact on their school community. The group decides which aspects to focus on and discuss ways in which to advocate within their school.

The EARA Group’s aims are to:
Promote the Equality Act
Enhance pupil voice
Challenge discrimination and prejudice
Advocate for the rights of the child (UNCRC)
Encourage positive attitudes towards difference
Develop pupil confidence and life skills
Support vulnerable students
Increase participation and engagement

Our students were wonderful ambassadors for the school during their visit to Christ the King College. The group found the meeting very useful with Amelia stating, “I think the session was very inclusive and covered lots of challenging topics related to school. There needs to be change to make schools safer environments to be in”.

Keep a lookout for updates about our group’s project!

Year 7 Boys Win Island Schools League

Year 7 Boys Win Island Schools League

On Thursday 20 October the year 7 boys played their final game of the Island Schools League, going into the game unbeaten this year. Their opponents this week were Ryde Academy, another strong looking team. However, goals from Logan, Bobby (2), Owen, and Blayze (2) took us to a 6-2 lead with less than 2 minutes to go. Right at the end of the match a penalty was awarded to us and super goalkeeper Austin scored a cracker of a goal making it 7-2!

A very happy end to an unbeaten season. The team now await their medals. A huge well done to the whole team and all our supporters! Bring on the upcoming indoor events!

Girls Under 13’s Football Update!

Girls Under 13’s Football Updates!

On Wednesday 12 October, we took two 7-a-side football teams over to play The Bay. The first game was a warm up game where our A team played The Bay’s B team and vice versa. Both teams played well and got used to the 7-a-side formations. The next games were the real ones, with the result of the A v A game counting towards our league. Both our teams actually won their games, with the A’s winning 2-0 and the B’s winning 5-3.

On Wednesday 19 October, the girls played their fourth league match of this season. After three wins they were feeling confident. The match was very even against Cowes but eventually Lyla and Imogen found the net in the windy conditions. Cowes put up a good fight but were no match for our girls on this occasion. Great squad performance and a well deserved win. Excellent work girls!

Farm Garden Update!

Farm Garden Update!

We are very grateful to Natasha and Colin from The Garlic Farm, who paid a visit to our Farm Garden last week. They spent time with our agricultural students, showing them how to grow garlic and discussing the different techniques to improve results.

Students were very interested to learn about garlic and how to grow it successfully. They have now planted lots in the polytunnel and in the outdoor beds to compare results. We can’t wait until we harvest them to see which works best!

We also had a wonderful visit from Charles Dowding last Friday. Charles is a well known horticulturalist and author who came in to show us his no dig method of gardening.

Charles gave us a demonstration of his method and some wonderful tips on how to get the most out of our garden. It was a very informative lesson and the students will now be able to start putting the no dig method into practice!

Watch this space, we have more exciting Farm Garden news coming very soon!

Year 11 Geography Trip

Year 11 Geography Trip

Our year 11 geographers had an informative and interesting visit to Yaverland and Sandown on Monday. The purpose of their visit was to explore the impact that sea defences have on an area. They looked at the do nothing approach at Yaverland and the hold the line approach at Sandown.

The students looked at the differing management strategies in place and the reasons behind the different approaches. They then collected primary data using techniques such as beach profiles, groyne drops, land use maps and environmental quality surveys.

We were very lucky to have great weather on the day and it was lovely to see how friendly and polite students were with members of the public.
