Sports Hall Athletics Championships

Sports Hall Athletics Competition

On Wednesday afternoon, a group of year 8 students headed over to Medina to compete in the Island Schools Sports Hall Athletics Competition, whereby our team of 5 boys and 6 girls took on 5 athletic events each.

The students performed well across each field event, with stand out performances in the speed bounce which saw Euan take 1st position with 76 bounces in 30 seconds. Taylor also put in a commendable effort with 68 in the girls competition. In the triple jump Lucy gained a PB with 4.98m and Destiny just behind with 4.88m. In the shot put Freya got 6.30m. Benji and Theo also performed well in the vertical jump coming in the top 5.

On the track events, the boys put in a superb effort on the obstacle race which saw them dominate and this was followed up by excellent performances in the 2 lap race by Euan and Jack with both gaining a 2nd place. Jack also gained a second in the 4 lap race.

Theo also inspired others with his excellent motivational coaching from the sideline and also through his strategic conversations with officials.

Overall, an excellent performance by team Carisbrooke!

Indoor Rowing Championship

Indoor Rowing Championship

On Thursday 17th February, it was the annual Indoor Rowing Championship at The Bay Secondary School. This is the 9th year straight that Carisbrooke have been part of this. They previously came 6th in 2013 followed by third in 2014 and back to back runners up positions in 2015 and 2016. In 2017 the Carisbrooke Blades were crowned champions and became the first school to take the championship away from The Bay who have always dominated the event. In 2018, Carisbrooke went back to runners up and in 2019 came in third followed by 4th place overall in the last event in 2020. Therefore, the Carisbrooke side were ready to start a new era and were aiming for a top three spot this year. On the day a few last minute changes occurred to the roster which couldn’t be helped but the team still managed to put in some excellent performances and whilst they finished 4th overall slightly below target they did themselves and the school proud.

In year 7 Lincoln, River, Tayler, Beau and Tiff performed well in their first outing for us. Lincoln and Tiff both gained second place in their endurance events and Lincoln also followed this up with a 2nd in the sprint. In the relay they gain a 3rd overall and so they should all be very proud of themselves. In year 8, Bethan gained a second in the endurance and Logan came from fourth at the beginning of the race to win his individual event thanks to some amazing pacing from him. Logan would have backed this performance up in the sprint but unfortunately, a mechanical failure prevented this from happening. In year 9 Harriet took 1st place in the endurance event and 2nd in the sprint and this outstanding performance was backed up by Kian in the sprint who also gained 2nd. The year 9 team then went on to win the relay and final event of the day with a classy and well polished performance. In year 10 both Emily and Tom gained 2nd placed in the endurance event and Emily backed this up with a 2nd in the sprint alongside Seb who also gained 2nd. In the relay they also gained 2nd overall to finish a very consistent performance. In year 11, Amy stood head and shoulders above the rest gaining a 2nd in the sprint and a 1st in the endurance which was also backed up by Oakley with a 2nd in the endurance.

Every student who took part for Carisbrooke pushed themselves to the limit in this very intense and exposed situation and this demonstrates a real brilliance physically and strength mentally. Both Mr Fleming and Mr Peake are very proud of them all.

Well done!

Regeneration Trip for Year 12 Geographers

Regeneration Trip for Year 12 Geographers

Year 12 Geographers have been learning about urban regeneration and how sports, market and arts can be used to lead regeneration.  As part of this work, we visited Independent Arts at the Creative Hub in Newport High Street to learn about how the arts are being used to regenerate and revive interest in the town centre.

Students brought in their own photos of Newport in need of regeneration or Newport regenerated and with the help of creatives, Peta, Hannah and Trudy, students created a monoprint in ink.

The art helped students to look at Newport in a new light and understand how the arts can be used in small-scale grassroots regeneration.

Dylan said,” Newport is in need of regeneration because of the abandoned buildings.”
Jamie said ” the Creative Hub adds a sense of community to a place that needs it”.

Many thanks to Independent Arts for such a wonderful afternoon.
Mrs Allen.

Visit to the University of Bath

Visit to the University of Bath

Yesterday saw our Year 12 & 13 BTEC and A Level PE students travel to the University of Bath.

Throughout the day, students took part in a VO2 Max test, a Wingate Fitness test and a practical session based on plyometrics, speed, quickness and agility. They were also given a tour of the world class sporting facilities where they witnessed a number of the GB rowing squad in training and had a Q&A with an ex-student who is working towards her Olympic rowing dream.

Students were a pleasure to take and a credit to The Island VI Form. Thank you to Mrs Tuck for her incredible driving skills!

Model United Nations General Assembly

Model United Nations General Assembly Event

On Saturday 12th February, the Island VI Form entered two teams into the Ryde School 2022 Model United Nations General Assembly event. Our students represented the countries of Brazil and North Korea.

During the day, the delegates discussed a range of important global, social, political and economic issues, ranging from gun rights to the use of torture and the status of Northern Ireland. At the end of the day, all delegates had an opportunity to take part in the General Assembly crisis event simulating a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Finally, awards were given out in numerous categories. Joe and Isaac both received ‘Best Delegate’ awards for their particular contributions, whilst the VI Form team representing Brazil were awarded the prestigious Best Delegation Award.

Head of School’s Blog – 11 February 2022

11 February 2022

Just wanted to talk about internet safety this week, and share some simple advice to keep you safe:

– Remember not to share passwords with people or be tricked into sharing answers to security questions, no-one needs to know your mothers maiden name or your first pets name.

– Keep information private: Look at your settings on social media applications and consider what you are sharing and with whom.

– Stay safe on the move: Be aware that when you are out and about joining WiFi networks that they might not be safe and might be designed to capture information from you.

– Online reputation: Anything you send or post online is potentially shared forever. Make sure that something you say or post doesn’t cost you a job or your reputation in the future. Or that something you share with an individual is later used to bully you into doing other things.  If you wouldn’t want your loved ones to see it or read it, maybe you shouldn’t post it?

Further advice can be found at: Internet Matters

I would also like to draw your attention to the VI Form Exams Timetable 2022 which is available on our website. Your teachers will start to prepare you for the journey towards these exams, please engage with them. Being properly prepared builds confidence and is the best way to ensure that you get the most successful outcomes.

Have a good weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 11 February 2022

11 February 2022

We are extremely pleased that we are able to offer so many extracurricular activities at the moment in a variety of interests and hobby areas. These are particularly important as they give students the opportunity to broaden their social circle / friendships. Spending time with other students enjoying the same interest is a very valuable and positive experience. The staff also very much enjoy being able to provide these enriching clubs.

A reminder to Year 11 parents/carers that it is Parents’ Evening next week, where virtual online meetings are available with your child’s subject teachers. Please make sure you have booked appointments to discuss their recent trial results and what they need to do in these last few months to still make a difference. There is still time! (To make appointments and for them to make a difference!)

Next week we will be holding celebration assemblies for each of our year groups. This is a great way to end the term and the students and staff do enjoy success being shared. Next Thursday, 17 February, also marks ‘National Random Acts of Kindness Day’ – What can you do as a random act of kindness to make someone else’s day better?

Although the political message around COVID-19 is beginning to change, it is important that we continue to follow the current guidance. Anyone with symptoms needs to isolate and arrange a PCR test. Anyone who tests positive on an Asymptomatic LFD test also need to isolate and follow the Government guidance. Good hand and respiratory hygiene continue to be important.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 11 February 2022

11 February 2022

It does not seem possible that we have just one more week of the half term left!

Assemblies and PSHE lessons this week have been themed around Mental Health Awareness week. A huge thank you to the staff who have delivered these. Next week I am looking forward to our celebration assemblies. Our students have worked hard this half term and it is a pleasure to reward them.

We had an artist in school this week working with our students in a “Mark Making” workshop. I was fortunate enough to visit the year 11 group whilst they were working with her. Some of their creations were very interesting and very powerful. You can read more about this in the Biosphere Blog below.

Pantomime rehearsals are back up and running afterschool. It is lovely to see the students so excited and committed to the performance. I am very much looking forward to the evening performance on Tuesday 29th March.

Don’t forget to get your appointments made for the year 11 parents evening next Thursday.
