Year 11 Prom 2023

Year 11 Prom 2023

Year 11 students had an amazing evening on Friday 7 July at their glamorous James Bond themed Prom night at the Albert Cottage Hotel. Students made grand entrances, arriving in sports cars, classic cars, a tractor, on horseback and with the Hell Angels! They then took to the red carpet and walked through the historic corridors to the dining room where they were each given welcome (soft) drinks before being served a BBQ style buffet.

Awards were presented to students for a variety of fun categories, voted for by the students, before Fin Gilbert and Grace Argyle were crowned Prom King and Queen. Year 11 took to the dancefloor and lit up the room with their dance moves and singing!

The students all looked glamorous and it was a perfect evening, in a beautiful setting, for the most wonderful group of young people. We couldn’t be any more proud of them!

Huge thanks to Mrs King for her support and organisation of the event.

Lit in Colour and Keats House Visit

Lit in Colour and Keats House Visit

Ten A level English Literature students went with Mrs Carroll and Mr Saunders on a trip to London this week to take part in a diversity conference as part of the nationwide Lit in Colour programme. The event at Friends House included work from Birmingham Young Poet Laureate Iona Mandal, presentations from Jeffrey Boakye, Wendy Lennon and Akiya Henry on issues of identity, ethnicity, Shakespeare and drama, and a poetry slam hosted by Yomi Sode.

Afterwards, they visited Keats House in Hampstead and took in the atmosphere and history of the place that was home to the Romantic poet for two of the most productive years of his short writing life.

Finally, they were able to drop in on the Treasures exhibition at The British Library and see first-hand some of the most significant documents, books and maps collected there. It was a long and lovely day, with lots of literary inspiration for everyone who took part.

Peer Education Programme

Peer Education Programme

On Wednesday this week, 20 Year 9 students from Carisbrooke College and 18 Year 9 students from Medina College gathered together at our Island VI Form for induction and training on our Peer Education Programme (PEP). This is a secondary school-based educational project developed by the Mental Health Foundation that aims to give young people the skills and knowledge they need to safeguard their mental health and that of their peers. These students will then use their training and knowledge to deliver lessons on Understanding Mental Health to Year 7 tutor students later in the year. We will also be looking to encourage these PEP students as active Mental Health Ambassadors in our school community, providing peer support to our younger students at break/lunchtimes and school events. At Carisbrooke College, students will also be helping out in the new Wellbeing Room.

Embedding this crucial mental health knowledge within the curriculum supports our whole-school approach to positive mental health and wellbeing and creates a unique learning opportunity for our older students. Our new PEP cohort demonstrated outstanding effort and enthusiasm in the day’s training and we are very excited to see them in action next year at Carisbrooke and Medina!

Head of School’s Blog – 7 July 2023

7 July 2023

Year 10 trial exams finished this week. The behaviour and attitude to their trial exams has been exceptional. Results of these exams will be shared with the students during their lessons.

On Tuesday we welcomed our new year 7 students and they spent a day with us giving them the opportunity to experience what being a ‘Carisbrooke student’ is like. The students were amazing and it was a very positive day. We are all looking forward to them joining our community in September.

Year 10 students attended their work shadowing placements on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Feedback so far has been very positive from both the students and work placements. We hope that this has given the year 10 students some insight into the working environment and also assisted them in their decisions for their future after Carisbrooke College.

We have our year 11 prom this evening and we’re expecting a great evening to celebrate the end of their time at Carisbrooke.

Have a great weekend.

7 July 2023

We welcomed our new Year 6 into 7 students on Tuesday. It was a really successful day, full of activities, followed by an extremely well attended Transition Evening with their parents/carers. Thank you to everyone who attended. We look forward to you being part of our Medina College community in September.

Year 10 completed their trial exams at the start of this week. It was an important process which has started to prepare them for their exams next summer. Their results will be shared with them in lessons. There will be another trial set of exams in Year 11 to further prepare/support them.

Our Year 11 students celebrated at a wonderful Prom yesterday evening at Albert Cottage. This is an important event in their school life so we hope that they all thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to Mrs Keenan-Croad and Mr Tennant for arranging this for them.

Next week we have a variety of activities and events planned, please keep an eye on our social media platforms for reports and photos.

Sports Day 2023

Sports Day 2023

Last week, we saw a great level of competition down on the field as we embarked on our annual sports day. The year 8s kickstarted the day with a superb display of athleticism, enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

The track session began with the middle distance events, which were tightly contested between 8B and 8D, with 8D taking the overall lead on points. 8A made a comeback in the sprint events to take 59 points for their team, but out in the field, 8D were scoring highly in both the throwing and jumping events. Going into the relay there were just 4 points separating the top two finishers. 8D won both the girls and boys relay to take victory and bring home the trophy for Mr Gloyn and their tutor group.

Year 8 Results:
1st place – 8D (188 points)
2nd place – 8B (181 points)
3rd place – 8A (178 points)
4th place – 8C (130 points)

Well done to all of our students who demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and resilience, and a huge thank you to our fantastic year 11 students who came back to support the PE department run the events.

In the afternoon, sports day turned serious with the year 7 tutors arriving in their sports kit ready to battle. Rewards were on offer for any year 7 who broke Miss McArthur’s sports day record for the 1500m, but sadly the record still stands for another year. There were some excellent displays of pacing as the middle distance races got underway, with 7A maximising points early doors. 7A continued to dominate in the sprints, but out in the field 7D were vanquishing the field events, capitalising on the points for both throwing and jumping events. 7B came first in both relays but unfortunately it was not enough to knock 7A and Miss Peckham off the top of the podium.

Year 7 Results:
1st place – 7A (221 points)
2nd place – 7D (209 points)
3rd place – 7B (184 points)
4th place – 7C (166 points)

The Year 13 Prom was a huge success at Landguard Manor last week, over 150 of you enjoyed the evening and photographs are available on the link shared with you via email and on the Student Services Hub. Enjoy your summer and see you on results day – 17th August. (Bring your ID!).

Congratulations to Year 12 on finishing your trial exams. We have 2 weeks to go and will be starting Year 13 content straight away, you need to attend all of your lessons. We will be having an assembly next week which you all need to attend, I will advertise the date and time through the Student Services Hub.

We had over 450 new students on site this week. It was a pleasure to meet 300 of our next Year 12, who picked up their timetable / blocking information as well as having the opportunity to meet staff and explore the building. If you couldn’t make it we have posted all of the information.

We have also had 150 Medina College Year 10 students join us for their Introduction to VI Form, part of their post 16 planning. They had a great experience exploring what we have to offer from each of the 6 faculties, as well as discovering the building itself. We look forward to welcoming Carisbrooke College students on Monday.

We will be offering VI Form taster lessons during November for both Medina and Carisbrooke students and more information will follow in the new term.

Finally, our congratulations to Mia Stillwell and Maisey Kent who are members of the Island Games Swimming and Athletics squads, representing the Isle of Wight in Guernsey next week. We are very proud that you have been selected to compete and hope you both have a fantastic experience. Wishing you the very best of luck in your events.

Head of School’s Blog – 30 June 2023

30 June 2023

Best wishes for the Year 12 Trial exams that have now started. Just a reminder that when exams are finished, lessons will continue (from Thursday 6 July up until Friday 21 July) and you need to attend, as many subjects will be starting on Year 13 content. These trial exam grades will be used; alongside classwork, homework and other assessed pieces of work, by teachers to inform our UCAS predicted grades.

We had two great trips to Portsmouth University and Southampton University this week, with students seeing the impressive facilities that all Universities have to offer.  All students should be planning for the next steps beyond VI Form.  You should be signed up on the UCAS website (thank you if you have done this already), researching future courses or job opportunities and / or creating a CV and letter of application.

Our Art Foundation students presented their final pieces this week at an exhibition hosted by Independent Arts (https://independentarts.org. uk/). There was a fantastic display of creative talent on show, with a huge variety of pieces presented. We are extremely proud of all that they have achieved and know that they will go on to do even more amazing things.

If you feel you have gaps in your ‘Career Capital’ (leadership, resilience, teamwork etc.) now is the time to start doing something about it. “Working towards DoE and work experience”… is a better expression than “I haven’t started”.

Enjoy your weekend.

30 June 2023

It has been the turn of our Year 10 students to experience trial exams under exam conditions this week. We have made the expectations the same as they will be required to adhere to next summer. This is an important part of their exam preparation as it takes away the fear of the unknown and means by the time their real exams arrive, the logistics, routines and requirements will be embedded and therefore their concentration can be completely focused  on their subject knowledge and revision.

Next Tuesday, 4 July we are hosting our new Year 6 into 7 students, and giving them the opportunity to  experience ‘a day in the life of a secondary school student’. We are very much looking forward to welcoming them.

You will have received a letter regarding next Wednesday and Friday, as they are the next two days of industrial action by the NEU. Please ensure that you read the letter, a copy can be found here

We have many events over the next few weeks, so please keep any eye on our website and social media platforms.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Feedback about year 10s behaviour and attitude to their trial exams has been exceptional. I am so impressed with how they have behaved and taken onboard the exam condition expectations. The results of these will inform staff of the next steps required for each of them individually as they enter year 11. If you or they have any questions or issues regarding exams, please contact Mrs Smith, Head of Year or your child’s tutor.  Exams will continue next week.

Thank you to all the staff and students involved in the sports day for year 7 and 8 this week.  A great time was had by all and it was amazing to see the students all working together and supporting each other.  It was a pleasure to award medals to the winners.  Congratulations to you all!

Thank you to the parents/carers who attended our Parent Voice meeting on Tuesday – Your opinion really matters to us!

A reminder that this letter was emailed out earlier in the week with details of industrial action taking place in schools next week.  Next Tuesday and Wednesday is work shadowing for year 10 – hopefully many students are making the most of this valuable opportunity.

Have a great weekend.
