Christmas at Osborne

Christmas at Osborne

On Tuesday our ‘SING’ groups from Carisbrooke College, Medina College and The Island IV Form came together to perform at Osborne House as part of a ‘Christmas at Osborne ’ event. The event was organised by the IOW Music Hub in partnership with English Heritage.

The performance took place in the historic Durbar Room, the very room used by Queen Victoria and her family for their own Christmas performances  – a truly unique performance opportunity for everyone involved!

Students performed ‘You will be found’, a song they have been preparing for our upcoming performance of ‘Wendy and Peter Pan’, along with the quirky ‘I want a hippopotamus for Christmas’ and Adolphe Adam’s classic ‘O Holy Night’.’

We have included a photo from a book located in the Durbar Room which has an extract of an interview with Dorothy Blake, who was born in 1866 and was the daughter of Queen Victoria’s land agent. Here Dorothy describes her memories of Christmas time at Osborne.

Our students performed beautifully. Mrs Brear and Miss Peckham are very proud of them all.

Students ‘Takeover’ at Independent Arts

Students ‘Takeover’ at Independent Arts

On Saturday 19 November, seven students from Carisbrooke and Medina College organised and facilitated the most amazing Takeover Day at Independent Arts.

Our determined team rose to the challenge and took on the responsibilities of Hub Manager, Workshop Coordinators, Fundraisers and Hub Coordinators all in response to our incredible Biosphere project. They managed to organise some fantastic workshops, sell a range of merchandise and organise some fabulous live music, courtesy of our wonderful VI Form music students.

They were joined on the day by a group of incredibly talented fashion students, from The Island VI Form, who set up a pop-up shop displaying the most beautiful handmade tote bags.  They were also joined by Island Artist Pete Bradley who very kindly gifted us his time by creating a wonderful window display that members of the public were able to join in with.

The Hub saw 459 people through the door on Saturday, a new record for the local charity!

We are so very proud of all the students involved and we cannot wait to work with Independent Arts again.

SING Workshop

27 students from across the federation gathered together at the Island IV Form last Saturday for a federated singing workshop with Mrs Peckham and Mrs Brear, to rehearse their repertoire for our upcoming musical events.

We are very excited to be performing in the Durbar Room at Osborne House on Tuesday 29 November in partnership with IOW Music Hub and English Heritage, and at our IWEF Christmas Concert on Thursday 15 December. Our singers will also be featuring in the upcoming Isle of Wight Education Federation production of The Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘Wendy and Peter Pan’ at Medina Theatre on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 December.

We had excellent feedback from students and parents following the workshop on Saturday, we are so please that everyone enjoyed themselves!

The Environment Agency Visits Geography

The Environment Agency Visits Geography

Last week Emily and Jemma from the Isle of Wight Coastal Scheme team within the Environment Agency paid a visit to our year 12 and 13 Geography students. They came in to update us on the improvements to the sea defences along Sandown Bay.

It was great to hear the professionals talking about coastal defences using language and ideas that we teach at The Island VI Form. It was also very exciting to hear plans for increasing biodiversity by 20% along the new flood defence schemes. We were astonished at how long the stakeholder consultation takes and the time between getting the idea through to finding funding, to then actually completing the work.

A number of our students were inspired by the career routes into the Environment Agency. Not only did students hear from an apprentice but they were also given information on the funded degrees in flood defence engineering. Emily showed us lots of photos of her working in the field on incidents as well as fun rafting and camping as part of the LGBT+ group at the Agency. It looked like a lot of fun!

We are very grateful to the officers for taking time out of their busy schedule to come speak with our students.

Forensic Investigations

Forensic Investigations

Our Year 13 students, who are studying BTEC level 3 foundation diploma in forensic investigations have been researching and learning how to process a crime scene.

Last week we had a guest speaker from the Criminal Prosecution Service (CPS) visit us to go through the different types of evidence and how they are presented in court. Detailing the specific procedures required to maintain continuity and preservation of evidence and how to present this in court.

This week the students took part in a mock crime scene. The exercise is an important part of the qualification and saw our students take charge of a crime scene from cordoning off the area, diligently photographing and logging evidence and then finally correctly collecting and tagging the evidence ready to be transferred to the laboratory for processing.

All students passed the activity with flying colours and now have the task of writing up the report to support the exercise.

Portsmouth University Welcomes VI Form Students

Portsmouth University Welcomes VI Form Students

A group of Geology and Geography students from Island VI Form along with Mrs. Allen, were welcomed to Portsmouth University Open day last Saturday. The university funded our travel and we were met and greeted from the ferry and taken to the main buildings where Earth Science and Geography are taught.

We chose to look at Earth Sciences, Geography and Environmental Sciences and learnt about each of the courses that the students were interested in. The students were then given a tour of the department facilities. The course content was exciting with a big emphasis on work place skills and experiences as well as the in-depth knowledge of how Earth works. There were lots of opportunities for international travel, some of it funded within the course, as well as work placements and lots of fieldwork and site visits.

The students commented on how it was great to be able to visit the university with their peers and get a feel of student life in the city (and Greggs sausage rolls!). We also found out about the wealth of support on offer to students from the Wellbeing Service and the Student Disability Advice centre where students can apply for a range of support from IT packages to counselling to help them to achieve their goals.

The next step is to get those applications in and Student Services at VI Form are offering weekly help sessions with UCAS applications. The staff at Portsmouth commented on how attending an open day was an important factor when they decide who to offer places to. We are also setting up an outreach opportunity where staff from the University will come to visit VI Form to stretch and challenge our geography and geology students.

There are fantastic degree courses on offer at a range of universities and excellent career opportunities out there for Geology and Geography students. We hope that students will take the time to visit different universities and look at all the options available to them over the coming months.

A Level Results 2022

A Level Results 2022

18 August 2022

We are very proud of everyone’s achievements and dedication. The results earned by the students reflect the hard work and dedication put in by students and staff over the last two years.

The Island VI Form continues to support students to thrive in an environment that is solely focused on VI Form teaching and life, which is an excellent stepping stone to life at university, or higher level apprenticeships.

There have been some brilliant results for individual students in their A Level and BTEC studies with some students getting straight A grades or double distinctions.

The vast majority of students are going on to their first choice universities and we are excited for them to be starting the next stage of their education.

Governors and College leadership teams are delighted that it has been another great year for the students and staff of The Island VI Form.

Dave Mumford, Head of The Island VI Form said “ I am delighted with the individual results that have been achieved. We have over 150 students going on from the Island to follow a vast range of university courses including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Law and Fashion, to name just a few. Many students have gained entry to top Russell Group Universities across the country. Congratulations to all students on their achievements and I would like to thank parents and staff for all their support”
