Regeneration Trip for Year 12 Geographers

Regeneration Trip for Year 12 Geographers

Year 12 Geographers have been learning about urban regeneration and how sports, market and arts can be used to lead regeneration.  As part of this work, we visited Independent Arts at the Creative Hub in Newport High Street to learn about how the arts are being used to regenerate and revive interest in the town centre.

Students brought in their own photos of Newport in need of regeneration or Newport regenerated and with the help of creatives, Peta, Hannah and Trudy, students created a monoprint in ink.

The art helped students to look at Newport in a new light and understand how the arts can be used in small-scale grassroots regeneration.

Dylan said,” Newport is in need of regeneration because of the abandoned buildings.”
Jamie said ” the Creative Hub adds a sense of community to a place that needs it”.

Many thanks to Independent Arts for such a wonderful afternoon.
Mrs Allen.

Visit to the University of Bath

Visit to the University of Bath

Yesterday saw our Year 12 & 13 BTEC and A Level PE students travel to the University of Bath.

Throughout the day, students took part in a VO2 Max test, a Wingate Fitness test and a practical session based on plyometrics, speed, quickness and agility. They were also given a tour of the world class sporting facilities where they witnessed a number of the GB rowing squad in training and had a Q&A with an ex-student who is working towards her Olympic rowing dream.

Students were a pleasure to take and a credit to The Island VI Form. Thank you to Mrs Tuck for her incredible driving skills!

Guest speaker for English, law and media students

Thank you to Ian Harrison for visiting our English, law and media students this week.

Ian Harrison is a lawyer for Reach PLC and works for the Daily Mirror.  He visited VI Form students to discuss the role of journalism in our democratic society and the balance between Press freedom and the Law. Ian drew on a range of books, historical development of journalism as we know it today and his own experiences to illustrate how important trusted news sources like Newspapers are for the effective functioning of our society.

Students engaged in the discussion and really enjoyed hearing first hand what life is like for a Lawyer working in the field of journalism and media. We are very grateful to Ian for giving up his time to come in and visit us.

Parent Governor Vacancy

Parent Governor Vacancy

The Isle of Wight Education Federation has always aimed for a partnership with parents which undoubtedly brings great benefits to the children. One of the most significant ways you can help in promoting this aim is to volunteer to be a Parent Governor.

This week, we have sent a letter out inviting nominations from parents who would like to join the Governing Board. Long serving parent governor Teresa Harris came to the end of her term of office in December, leaving a vacancy for a parent governor.

If you feel you can help in this capacity, please contact the clerk on 01983 526523 or emma.shambrook@iwef.org.uk for an application form, which will need to be completed and returned to the clerk by 12.00 noon on 16 February 2022. If there are more applications than vacancies a ballot will be held.

A copy of the Federation’s governor recruitment information can be found here: Governor Recruitment. This includes more information about the work of the Governing Board, who can be a governor and what to expect. If you would like to talk to a governor before applying please contact the clerk.

Please note, that for the protection of children, all governor appointments are subject to an identity check.

Dance Live! 2022

Dance Live! 2022

Five months of hard work certainly paid off for our wonderful Dance Live Team. They competed with their heads held high and full of energy. We couldn’t have asked any more from any of the team, from our run-throughs to the real thing, they gave our performance absolutely everything. Every move, lift and somersault was executed with the most electrifying energy.

Our team was made up of students from Carisbrooke College, Medina College and The Island VI Form. They have come together and shown fantastic teamwork from the start. We couldn’t be any more proud of them.

I can’t thank our dancers and wonderful families enough, as well as Mrs McCarthy, Mrs Lythgoe, Mrs Hookey and Mr Wililams for their enthusiasm, support and genuine desire to provide our students with the most wonderful of opportunities.

Our entry won the technical award and an incredible second place! We await to hear if we qualify as the highest scoring second place entry which would put us through to the grand final in May!

Children’s Mental Health Week 2022

Children’s Mental Health Week 2022

7 – 13 February is Children’s Mental Health Week. The week is run by the charity Place2Be, and focuses on the importance of promoting good mental health and wellbeing for children and young people.

You will find lots of helpful resources for families on their website: https://www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk/parents-and-carers/

Here we share some of their top tips for parents/carers to support your child’s emotional growth.

⦁ Talk about when your child was younger

Most children enjoy hearing their parents tell stories about when they were younger. Recall stories that highlight how your child has developed and changed over the years. For example, how you enjoyed teaching them to learn to ride a bike, or swim. Or how proud you were when they took part in a school assembly – even though they were nervous. If you are an adoptive parent, foster or kinship carer, you will still have lots of memories to share from when you first came together as a family.

⦁ Notice when your child has developed and grown

You may have made marks on the walls to recognise how tall your child has grown over the years, or looked at old photos together. It is important to also recognise and praise emotional growth. This could be letting them know how proud you are when they have learnt to walk away rather than fight with a sibling, or how they have learnt to ask others to play when they used to be too shy to do so.

⦁ Encourage your child to try new things

This could be new foods, a new activity or a new experience. Praise their willingness to ‘give things a go’ rather than whether they were ‘good’ at it. This will give them confidence to continue to develop and grow.

⦁ Listen to your child’s hopes and dreams for the future

Encourage your child to see that everything they are doing right now is a tiny step towards who they might want to become in the future. For example, your child staying away from home for a night is a step towards them being able to leave home for study or work in the future. Your child helping another child is an important step towards them becoming a counsellor, a doctor, a nurse or a teacher etc.

⦁ Support your child to learn from tough situations

It can be really hard when your child is not getting on with friends or having a problem with a teacher, or is disappointed with how something has worked out. Acknowledge the difficult feelings, but help your child to see that these situations help us to grow and develop so that we are better able to cope with life’s ups and downs.

Let your child know that if they are worried about something, they should always talk to an adult they trust. It could be you, someone in your family, a teacher or someone else in their school.

VI Form Students take part in Stuarts’ History Lecture

VI Form Students take part in Stuarts’ History Lecture

Year 12 and 13 Island VI Form History students were fortunate this week to attend a Stuarts’ history lecture courtesy of the Robert Hooke Society, based in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight.

Stuart Orme, the curator of the Cromwell museum in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire was guest speaker at the Society’s AGM and delivered a fascinating talk on ‘The World Turned Upside Down – the experience of the British Civil War’. Thanks to the fast internet connection, the students were able to listen in via Zoom in the newly renovated science room and take notes as part of their A Level studies.

History teacher Vix Lowthion said “we are always looking for opportunities for our students to listen to experts as part of their preparation for exams and their further studies at university. The Civil Wars are a fascinating part of our nation’s history and have sparked many discussions in class. We are grateful to the Robert Hooke Society for being so welcoming at their meeting. Robert Hooke was an incredibly important scientist, surveyor and polymath and the students are often surprised that he grew up here on the Isle of Wight!”

Students can find out more about Robert Hooke at https://www.roberthooke.org/

Mock Trial Competition

Mock Trial Competition

The Island VI Form Mock Trial teams enjoyed both triumph and defeat in the revived Interschool Mock Trial competition, wonderfully hosted by Cowes Enterprise College this week and supported by experienced members of the legal profession.

After weeks of preparation and support from teachers, both schools fielded two teams of barristers, witnesses and courtroom staff and thoroughly rose to the occasion through the re-enactment of a court case concerned with a serious offence. The burden of proof is always with the prosecution teams, and consequently the Jury returned Not Guilty verdicts after weighing up the evidence put forward during both mock trials.

Island VI Form teachers Joe Cody and Vix Lowthion said “It was brilliant that both schools were able to provide this opportunity for our students. We thank Cowes staff for ably hosting the event this year and Tim O’Flynn and Nick Hayward for mentoring those who took part.  Our teams of VI Form students were self-assured, well prepared and ready to think on their feet, and certainly have the skills to enter the legal profession in the future.”

The High Sherriff of the Isle of Wight, James Attrill, was also in attendance. “It was a brilliant event and I was lucky to have the opportunity to see it first hand. The students had clearly done a huge amount of preparation and they all took part in a very professional and confident way. Young people have had a tough time over the last 2 years and all credit to them for taking part.”

The Island VI Form offers an A Level in Law and an Applied Diploma in Criminology alongside many other opportunities for anyone looking to a future in the legal professions.
