Astronomy and Climate Club Update

Astronomy and Climate Club Update

Our dedicated team of astronomers is continuing to use the Faulkes telescope in Hawaii most Wednesdays when we meet, and we’ll soon be using the Faulkes observatory in Australia too, so we can get to see and image some of the objects in the Southern Sky, never visible here in the Northern Hemisphere. We are also doing a free online course ‘Astronomy With An Online Telescope’ as part of the Club sessions, which will provide access to the OU observatory in Tenerife.

We hope you enjoy the images below! And also please remember this is very much a work in progress… The learning curve is steep, but a lot of fun!

In other news, we are excited to have been awarded a grant of £600 from the Institute of Physics in order to purchase a GOTO telescope and imaging system for the Club and Science Department. Over the next month or so, we will be putting that together as we acquire all the components. Another project we’re looking at is designing and building a radio telescope – that will open up a whole lot of objects and ‘space stuff’ that are otherwise invisible to us, with the added massive advantage (especially in the UK) that you need neither night time nor clear skies to do radio astronomy!

Members (and your families and friends) please stay tuned for news of our first STAR PARTY. This will allow us to meet to do some ‘in person’ observing after sunset under the lovely Bortle 4 (1=darkest, 9=most light polluted) skies the Island has to offer. Possible locations are: the field next to the Vectis Astronomical Society’s observatory; sites in West Wight, for example Chale recreation ground, Whale Chine, the top part of Tennyson Down, the Jubilee car park near Brighstone. Students will be asked to come along accompanied by a responsible adult, as part of good safeguarding practice, although if this won’t be possible for any individual students, they are requested to discuss that with one of us (myself Mr Gray, Mrs Rowe, Mr Palmer or Dr Clarkson) so we can make sure they don’t miss out. Full details are to follow.

Finally, please also look out for weekly weather reports by our student meteorologists, using data and forecast models from our own weather station on the roof of Medina College. These will be published on our social media sites as well as the main IWEF website.
New members are welcome to join the club which meets every Wednesday, 3.10 – 4.30 pm in S1. You must have a signed consent form though which can be obtained from Mr Gray in Music or Mrs Rowe in Science.

Humanities Taster Day at University of Portsmouth

Humanities Taster Day at University of Portsmouth

Mr Havard-Swan and Mr Harrison took 27 year 8 students (15 from Carisbrooke College/12 from Medina College) to the University of Portsmouth for a Humanities taster day this week. The students were a credit to themselves and the colleges.
They really engaged with the 3 different workshops and the lecturers delivered to them. They were attentive, answered questions, and maturely articulated their own ideas on topics like genocide and humanitarian relief, and how citizens participate in government, including when working in teams with students from another school that they had only just met.
Their behaviour, including moving around the city between several different university buildings throughout the day, was superb. Overall, this was a great experience for the students which helped to open their eyes to what their future could like, if they choose to study a humanities subject at a higher level.

TED Talks Inspires Young Minds

TED Talks Inspires Young Minds

Mart Drake-Knight

A group of KS4 students had the privilege of attending a TEDx Talks event on Wednesday 2nd March which was hosted at Quay Arts and The Riverside Centre. The students joined other pupils from secondary schools across the island to listen to presenters from a diverse and varied background sharing their ideas on how to boost productivity and become the most successful version of ‘you’ that is possible.

The theme for the talks was, ‘If not now, when?’ and the guests explored how they can connect the island with the wider global audience in ways never conducted before.

The programme consisted of Isle of Wight based speakers such as Mart Drake-Knight, owner and co-founder of Rapanui Clothing,

as well as international names such as Kim Davis, who talked about her experiences working with A-list celebrities such as Beyonce, Andre Agassi and Marc Jacobs.

The students were enthralled by the words of wisdom from Tim Sissions and were encouraged to ‘Be on a 10’ by this industry-leading specialist in the design, implementation and delivery of exceptional Motivational Leadership.

The students left feeling revitalised and that anything is possible if you just give it a go.

World Book Day

World Book Day

Thursday marked the 25th World Book Day. The aim of the day is to celebrate and encourage a love of reading for pleasure and to encourage opportunities for all children to have a book of their own that they love.

“Spending just 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future success and it’s fun for all involved.” – World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck.

We celebrated this event at Medina College all day with a reading takeover! Every lesson began with a section of the story – The Case of Four and Twenty Blackbirds.

Throughout the day, murders were revealed, suspects interviews and, eventually, a resolution achieved. There was a real buzz around the school as the story unfolded and both staff and students really enjoyed it!

Here are some quotes from staff and students:

“LOVING THIS! Can we do it every week?”

“Going really well so far!! Loving it. But have no idea who dunnit…”

“Love it – they are enthralled”

Amazing Review of Medina’s Twelfth Night

Amazing Review of Medina’s Twelfth Night

Medina College students recently performed and recorded their interpretation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night for the Shakespeare Schools Film Festival. The performance has received the most incredible review and Mrs Shorrock is extremely proud of all of the students involved.

“Adapting Shakespeare for the screen takes a great deal of creativity, ingenuity and dedication and you demonstrated this in abundance! You should all be feeling extremely proud of your achievements”

You can watch the performance and read the full review below.
