Head of School’s Blog – 16 June 2023

16 June 2023

Yesterday we held our leavers assembly for year 11. It was a celebration of their success  and recognition of all they have achieved at Carisbrooke over the last five years. A huge thank you to Mrs King and their tutors for all the support they have given them during their time at Carisbrooke. There are two exams left after the weekend – Design Technology and Food and Nutrition. Breakfast will continue to be from 8.00 am for year 11 who have morning exams. I wish them all well in whatever they have opted to do once their final exams are over.

Year 10 parents/carers have been sent an invitation to ‘Help your child revise’ evening ahead of the trail exams that start later this month. This will be a useful evening for you, so please do try to attend if possible.

Next week, once again, blazers and ties are optional.

I urge year 11 festival goers to make sure that they get a good night’s sleep on Sunday and are properly prepared for their exam on Monday morning.

Carisbrooke College will be closed to all students on Monday 19 June unless they are sitting an exam.  There may be some delays on the roads so please take this into account when planning your journey to school.

Have a lovely weekend and, if you are attending the festival, please have fun and stay safe.

Head of school’s Blog – 9 June 2023

9 June 2023

It has been another busy start to the half term. I have enjoyed leading the assemblies this week on Inspiration. As you know, our core values are built around ASPIRE which are Ambition, Success, Progress, Inspiration, Respect and Equality. I continue to be impressed with the uniform, attitude and behaviour of all our students.

Year 11 students have had another busy week of exams. I am so proud of their attitude and behaviour in the exams and in their lessons. It does not seem possible that they only have four more official days in school. Their leavers assembly will be lesson 5 on Thursday. After this day they come in for their remaining exams only. Please continue to encourage your child to revise for their exams and if they have any concerns, to contact the year office. Breakfast will continue to be from 8.00 am for year 11 who have morning exams.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Year 7 parents’ evening on Wednesday. It was great to see so many parents in school and the teachers were very pleased to meet you.

Carisbrooke College will remain open on Festival Friday and students should attend as normal though there may be some delays on the roads so please take this into account when planning your journey to school.

Have a lovely weekend.

Year 11 students have continued to be amazing this week. Their attitude and behaviour in the exams and in lessons in between has been excellent. Please continue to encourage your child to revise for their exams and if they have any concerns, to contact the year office. The first week back after the half term break is another intensive one for them. Breakfast will continue to be from 8 am for year 11 who have morning exams. It does not seem possible that they only have two school weeks left in compulsory education!

As a reminder, our website has more information on exams and how you can support your child. Website links are here – these will be shared each week of the exam season – Exam logistics and Exams revision. If your child has any questions or concerns regarding the exams, please encourage them to talk to their tutor.

We will be holding revision sessions for year 11 students over the half term break. Please see the link to the revision sessions taking place.

As you are aware, we had our Ofsted Inspection in school Tuesday and Wednesday this week. I am immensely proud of our students and staff. As soon as we receive the report it will be shared with parents and carers. Thank you for all your support

Year 7 parents’ evening will be held in school on Wednesday 7 June. An email was sent to parents with a link to the system to book appointments. If you haven’t already booked your appointments, please do so as this is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and how they have settled into their first year at secondary school, with their individual subject teachers.

Have a lovely half term and I look forward to welcoming students back into school on Monday 5 June at 8.45 am in full uniform and ready to learn.

19 May 2023

The Year 11 exams have got off to a good start this week.  The students have been extremely supportive of each other and followed procedures perfectly.  Many of them are taking the opportunity to join their peers and subject teachers for breakfast in the mornings and there is a great vibe from the students.  Next week is another full week of exams and breakfast will continue to be served with teachers available for help and support for the students.

Our website has more information on exams and how you can support your child.  Website links are here  – these will be shared each week of the exam season – Exam logistics and Exams revision.  If your child has any questions or concerns regarding the exams, please encourage them to talk to their tutor.

I thoroughly enjoy the Royal Coronation Prom at Osborne House. It was lovely to see the students from both Medina and Carisbrooke College performing together. They produced an exceptional finale to the concert.

Year 7 parents’ evening will be held in school on Wednesday 7 June.  An email has been sent to parents today with a link to the system to book appointments.  Please do book in as this is an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and how they have settled into their first year at secondary school, with their individual subject teachers.

School will break up at 3.10 pm next Friday 26 May for the half term holiday.  We will be holding revision sessions for year 11 students over the break.  Please see the timetable below for the revision sessions taking place.

Have a lovely weekend.

Our annual Year 7 Federation Games were held at Medina College this week. Thank you to all the students who took part, the PE departments on both sites who made the day a success and to all the staff who helped on the day. Unfortunately this year we lost to Medina College but the event was a great success and enjoyed by all. It was lovely to see and hear about the sportsmanship of all the year 7s across the federation.

Some Year 11s sat their child development exam this morning and next week sees the start of the first full week of exams. Breakfast will be served in the canteen from 8.00 am every morning during the exam season and teachers will be available to offer support and guidance. Research shows that pupils who eat breakfast perform better in exams. Even mild dehydration can lead to tiredness, headaches, reduced alertness and diminished concentration.

By the time it is the night before the exam, all revision should have been done. This is the perfect time for pupils to calm their nerves and make sure that they are ready to enter into their exam well-rested and confident in their ability. Limiting distractions (social media, technology, the internet etc) can help pupils think better and reduce stress. Eating a nutritious meal, doing exercise or doing a relaxing activity the night before an exam can all contribute towards being in the right mindset to succeed in an exam.

Our website has more information on exams and how you can support your child. We are holding some half term Revision Sessions and the timetable for these has been emailed to parents/carers of year 11 today. Website links are here – these will be shared each week of the exam season – Exam logistics and Exams revision.

An update regarding HISP has been sent to all parents/carers today. Please take a few minutes to read the letter.

Have a lovely weekend.

It was lovely to once again welcome parents into school for parents evening. Thank you to all of the parents/carers of year 8 for attending. So that we can gauge how parents/carers felt out the face to face evening, we will be sending out a survey to those that did, and didn’t attend. We would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete this as we value the opinion of everyone in the Carisbrooke College community.

Year 7 will have a face to face parents’ evening after the half term break. Further details will follow.

Year 11 Foreign Language oral exams, art and practical Food Tech have all taken place. Next Friday is the start of the written exam season and this year it starts with Child Development. In six school days all year 11 will be sitting their Biology Exam. This is the first whole school exam. They have been briefed in assembly this week on routines and expectations. All morning exams are expected to start at 9.00 am. Students need to meet at the school entrance where they currently line up at 8.45 am. Students taking an exam in the afternoon will have an early lunch. This will be at 12.20 pm. All afternoon exams are expected to start at 1.00 pm. Again students will meet at the student entrance at 12.45 pm. Important and useful information can be found on our website here.

I hope you enjoy the extended bank holiday for the Coronation weekend.

28 April 2023

It has been another busy week. Apart from our usual learning in lessons, we have had NatWest in doing ‘The Big Event’ with year 9 and have started Bikeability sessions for our year 7. Feedback about our students from our external visitors was fantastic. Super proud of them all.

I hope that our year 9 students got a lot out of their ‘Take your child to work day’. This is an excellent opportunity for them to find out a bit more about a day at work. Hopefully some have been inspired.

Next week we return to face to face parents evenings for year 8. The evening will run from 4pm to 7pm and we look forward to welcoming you into school. If you haven’t already booked your appointments, please do so using the following link. This is an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their individual subject teachers.

Please click on the link to see all of the extra curricular clubs that we offer in school.

Just as a reminder, we have a bank holiday on Monday and an Industrial Action day on Tuesday (where we expect all year 11 students to attend school as normal). We look forward to students in years 7-11 returning to school on Wednesday 3 May.

Enjoy your bank holiday weekend.

21 April 2023

We have had a very good start to the term. Students have arrived dressed smartly and settled back into routines well. I have enjoyed leading the assemblies this week to the year groups on ‘Progress’ – what it means and why it is important. As you know, our core values are built around ASPIRE which are Ambition, Success, Progress, Inspirations, Respect and Equality.

Thank you to parents/carers who attended the year 10 virtual parents’ evening on Wednesday. The year 8 parents’ evening will be held in school Thursday 4 May. Further details will follow. These events give you an opportunity to speak to your child’s individual subject teachers and discuss their progress and any concerns that they may have.

Next Thursday 27 April is a strike day. A letter has been emailed out to parents/carers detailing the arrangements for the day.

Have a lovely weekend.
