Glitter and Glow Disco

Glitter and Glow Disco

On Thursday 1 February, we had our ‘Glitter and Glow’ themed Year 7 Disco to celebrate the students completing their first term at Medina College. The event was a great success for students and staff alike with face paint and glitter, glow sticks, Bahar’s tuck shop and an incredible set by DJ (Mr Turner) who provided the tunes. It was lovely to see so many students joining in with the fun and letting their hair down.

Thank you to the staff who gave up their time to organise and set up the disco and in particular to Mr Worsley who showed the students up on the dance floor. It was a well deserved treat for the year group and I hope those who came had a night to remember.

Bovington Tank Museum Trip

Bovington Tank Museum Trip

On Friday 26 January, 45 students in year 9 and 10 headed off to Bovington in Dorset for a Design and Technology based trip to the world famous tank museum.

As always, the museum and staff were incredible; the museum has over 300 vehicles across multiple buildings and is extremely well set up for catering to school kids.

Our first stop was the Mk IV world war one tank where, in groups, we got to spend some time in the tank and hearing what it would have been like to experience the earliest tanks in battle. It was a fairly horrific environment; 45 degrees celsius, full of toxic fumes, no suspension and so loud there was no way of talking to one another in the vehicle itself. By modern standards, this rudimentary design was a game changer in the war and helped turn the tide against the Germans in 1917 and 18 particularly.

Moving on, we got to participate in a similar experience but this time in a relatively modern Chieftain tank. These were in service until the early 1990s and, although far better protected and rather safer to be in than the deadly environment of the Mark IV, it was still an incredibly tight squeeze where the tank crew may have to spend days or even weeks.

In the afternoon, we looked around the conservation centre where we got to see the massive collection of stored tanks and the workshops where they are maintained and repaired. We were given a superb tour of the facilities and the mechanics and engineers talked us through the numerous issues they have encountered in looking after vehicles that, in many cases, have been out of service for decades.

It was a full on, fantastic day and the staff at the tank museum complimented the students on their impeccable behaviour, attitude and attentiveness on the trip, and were particularly impressed by their excellent manners.

Head of School’s Blog – 1 February 2024

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. February already! It does not seem possible that we have just one more week of the half term left!

Year 9 had the last of their option assemblies on Wednesday. They will have received an expression of interest form that needs to be filled in by Monday morning. There will be a Pathways Evening on Thursday 7 March. The year 9 Parents’ Evening is the first week back after half term – Wednesday 21 February. Please use the Arbor App to book your appointments. This is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress in school with their individual teachers. If you have any problems booking the appointments, please contact donna.keogh@iwef.org.uk.

The year 9 students also had an assembly on Thursday led by the School Immunisation Team who spoke to them about the Teen Booster coming up. If you would like your child to have the immunisation but haven’t yet completed the consent form that was sent out, please do so as soon as possible. If you have any problems, please contact the school.

Next Wednesday we have the Dance Live! competition at Portsmouth. I am really looking forward to watching their performance. The students have been working very hard in rehearsals for this and we wish them all the best for the evening.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week. Year 7 Riley, Year 8 Tobi, Year 9 Lucas and Daisy, Year 10 Cameron and Year 11 Bethany.

Don’t forget that tomorrow is a development day so students are not expected into school. We break up for the half term on Friday 9 February at 3.15 pm and return to school Monday 19 February at 8.45 am.

Have a lovely weekend.

School Transport Policies Consultation

The Isle of Wight Council is seeking residents and stakeholders view on proposed changes to the School Transport Policy (previously called the ‘Home to School Transport Policy). The School Transport Policy sets out the legal responsibilities that the Council has in order to provide assistance with transport to school or another education setting for children and young people living in the local authority area.

The Council is required by law to consult on any changes to its School Transport Policy. In addition, the council is consulting in relation to post 16 travel arrangements  Although there is no automatic entitlement to local authority funded school or college transport once a student is over the age of 16, Isle of Wight Council makes discretionary funding available in certain circumstances. If approved, changes to the policy will be applied to new applications from September 2024.

The consultation is open now and will close at 11.59 pm on Wednesday 13 March 2024.

Before giving your views via the online response form we ask that you read the Consultation Information Packs, both of which can be accessed via the consultation webpage www.iow.gov.uk/consultations. If you require a paper copy of the consultation pack or response form please email, transport.info@iow.gov.uk.

Head of School’s Blog – 1 February 2024

We are now officially in February and hopefully spring is beginning to emerge. I would first of all like to remind everyone that it is a Staff Development Day tomorrow with our colleagues from the new academy trust we will be joining. We will focus on increasing diversity in our curriculum and how to better support disadvantaged students.

Next week sees the last week of term before we break up for the half term holidays, so Friday 9 February is the last day.

We are very much looking forward to the Year 7 Disco later and, hopefully, it will be a really enjoyable event to celebrate their time with us so far.

The Year 9 Parents’ Evening booking system goes live today, so please make sure you are booking your face to face appointments with teachers to help students understand their progress and also guide you with the GCSE option choice process.

Finally, we really appreciate parental engagement as it makes our job much more productive and purposeful. However, could I ask that if you would like to see a member of staff could you please ensure you phone to make an appointment. This will ensure the right member of staff can see you and come prepared to answer any query you may have.

Have a lovely weekend and I will see all students back to school on Monday.

Head of School’s Blog – 1 February 2024

Dear Students, Parents & Carers,

We have had a number of applications to the role(s) of Head student and we will be in contact with those students about the next stage of the process soon. Interviews have been pencilled in for Tuesday 20 February.

Friday 2 February, tomorrow, is a Staff Development Day (the VI Form will be closed to students) and Half Term starts on Friday 9 February at 3.15 pm with lessons re-starting on Monday 19 February at 8.50 am.

I held assemblies this week encouraging students to create revision systems (timetables, flash cards, notes, mind maps, podcasts, videos etc.). Good systems beat good intentions every time. Be organised – you know that exams start after Easter for arts based subjects and around 20 May for most other subjects. Year 12 Trial Exams will start on Monday 1 July.

Create a manageable schedule / timetable and stick to it. This applies to Year 12 and Year 13.  If Year 12 students put the ground work in now, it will halve their workload in the build up to the real exams in Summer 2025.

Because it is important, I’ll say it again: good systems beat good intentions every time.

Enjoy your extended weekend,

Mr Mumford
