Head of School’s Blog – 8 September 2023

Head of School’s Blog – 8 September 2023

I have had the pleasure of leading all the assemblies this week and welcoming all the year groups back. We have had a very positive start to the academic year and students have returned with a positive attitude. I have been very impressed with the engagement in the learning that I have seen whilst walking around and popping into lessons.

It has been a pleasure to meet and welcome our new year 7 students. They have settled in well to life at Carisbrooke. We look forward to seeing them grow over the next five years with us.

Next week our extracurricular clubs begin. There are many to choose from so please encourage your child to take a look at what is taking place and sign up to them.

Thank you for your support with student uniforms, especially with the current hot weather. Unless you hear otherwise, students will be expected to wear blazers again from Monday.

Please remember to follow us on our social media channels for information, news and updates.

Head of School’s Blog – 8 September 2023

Welcome back to Year 13 students and congratulations and welcome to our new Year 12 students.

It has been great to see so many new students come and join us this week. I hope you have a great time with us over the coming 2 years. The key to your success is your attitude and work ethic. HWPO – hard work pays off.

We will be holding assemblies on Monday 11 September for both year groups. Year 12 at 9.50 am and Year 13 at 10.40 am. You all need to attend please.

On Thursday 14 September at 4.00 pm, we are hosting a ‘worries and wobbles’ session run by the Mental Health Support Team. This session will support Year 12 students with anxiety and any concerns about starting Post-16 education. Please click here for more details.

Finally, just to remind Oxbridge and medical students that they need to sign up for the entrance test next week if they are needed for their course.

Keep safe in the sun and enjoy your weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 8 September 2023

Head of School’s Blog – 8 September 2023

It is with great pleasure that I write this first newsletter as your new Head of School. My name is Mr Pearce-Jones and it has been an absolute pleasure to take over the day to day running of the school from Mr Parr-Burman. As Mr Parr Burman wrote to you before the summer holidays, he has not left the federation but is focusing primarily on his role of Executive Head of all three schools.

As a little bit of background to myself, I am an islander born and bred but for the past four years I have been part of the leadership team of an inner city school in Southampton. Previous to this, I have worked at both Carisbrooke College and Cowes High School (as it was then).

September is always an exciting part of the new academic year because it gives all our community the opportunity to reset and think about two important questions:

1) What type of person do I want to be this year?
2) Where am I hoping to make progress and experience success?

This is the message that I have been delivering in assemblies throughout the week. Sometimes, change can be difficult and a little overwhelming but as the author of Alice in Wonderland wrote, “everything seems impossible until you believe it is possible.”

As a school community, we believe that every child has the ability to shine, either in or out of the classroom, and we are passionate about making sure that we make this possible. So, if there are any barriers to learning that you feel your child is experiencing, please communicate this to us so that we can, where possible, ensure that these barriers are overcome.

It has been lovely to hear already about some of the successes that our students have been achieving over the summer holiday. As a couple of examples we have a Year 11 student, Summer G, who has produced a fabulous piece of art work which took her 56 hours to complete and Jasmine NC in Year 8, who took part in a hard ball cricket match for Cowes Cricket Club playing for the over 11s team and winning all their matches. Also, I would like to give a special shout out to Year 7 who have finished the week with best attendance of the school!

Although the weather has been hot this week, the uniform has been amazing so thank you. Unless you hear otherwise, students will be expected to be back in blazers from Monday.

Finally, as we end our first week, I am sure your child has been talking about some of the amazing learning they have been experiencing. However, if things have not been going well, please reassure them that every day is a new start and a new opportunity to make things better.

I very much look forward to working with you over the coming year and hope you manage to enjoy the sunshine this weekend.

Mr Pearce-Jones

Summer Concert 2023

Summer Concert 2023

On Thursday 20 July, we held our annual Isle of Wight Education Federation Summer Concert at the Island VI Form. The sun shone as audience members gathered outside to enjoy ice creams from The Plaza Ices and further refreshments were served indoors by our Parent Voice members.

The concert began at 7.00 pm and featured a variety of musical performances from students across the Federation. Our IWEF Sing group opened the evening’s programme with a lively performance of ‘Circle of Life’ from Disney’s The Lion King followed by the energetic ‘Royals’ by Lorde. Various ensembles from Carisbrooke College’s School of Rock club performed a variety of songs from Blur, Blondie, George Ezra and Pulp, collaborating on some with the Carisbrooke College Ukulele Club, KS4 Music students from Medina College and A-level Music students from The Island VI Form.

Over the course of the evening we heard 3 impressive original compositions from Olivia M with her catchy song ‘Take a Hint’, imaginative piano solo ‘Dreams’ from Oliver K and touching acoustic number ‘A different time’ from Tilly G. Olivia H wowed the audience with her powerful rendition of ‘Freddy, my love’ from the musical Grease, fresh from her appearance as ‘Marty’ in the recent IOW Theatretrain production.

The Island VI Form students and Medina College’s Year 11 came together to perform ‘70s classic ‘Go your own way’ by Fleetwood Mac with some impressive guitar solos from Jake C. Hannah C delivered a flawless performance of Sam Smith’s ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ with an emotional depth and musical expression well beyond her years. Carisbrooke College’s vocal trio of Annelise, Olivia and Lucy mastered some stunning harmonies and gave a nod to chart sensation Taylor Swift with their performance of ‘Love Story’. The Island VI Form’s Tilly and Rufus were joined by Lennon to give the concert some jazzy flavour with French Jazz standard ‘J’attendrai’.

The concert concluded with all of our performers coming together to perform a spectacular concert finale of The Rembrandts’ ‘I’ll be there for you’, having learnt and workshopped the song earlier in the day.

The concert raised funds for our IWEF Creative Arts Faculty to support future events and productions. Thank you to all the students, staff, parents and governors who came along to support this lovely evening, and to our Creative Arts Faculty for organising this fantastic event. We are thrilled to see our students performing with such skill and confidence, and look forward to all the exciting opportunities 2023/2024 will bring! All students are warmly encouraged to take part in our musical clubs and activities: please see your Music teacher for more details about how you can get involved this year.
