Dear Parents, Carers and Students

The heating in our main buildings will be disrupted during the last week of school. The current boiler is at the end of its life and is being replaced by 4 new boilers; one to run the hot water and the other three to heat the buildings. This should mean that we have reliable heating and we won’t have to run the heating to have hot water in the summer! This represents a further £100K of investment into our facilities. However it does mean that during the last 5 days of term, the main building will be heated by individual heaters in rooms. This will not be as efficient or effective as the central heating, so please dress warmly and get the Christmas jumpers out! Remember that the Reception block and Upper common room areas, classroom S5 and Art are on different heating systems, so these areas will be warm as usual.

Please find below information about the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, this is an excellent opportunity to boost your ‘career capital’ (resilience, leadership, teamwork ….) so that you can show off how amazing you are to future universities or employers. Participating in a DofE award, might be one of the reasons why you could be shortlisted for a university place or an interview in the future.

Thank you for your donations to our collection for the local food bank, we will be making a delivery to them on Thursday, so you still have time to donate if you can.

Finally, thank you to our former student Isaac Lethbridge, who is currently reading history at the University of Oxford and has come back to visit us today to speak with students who may be considering applying to Oxbridge in the future. Whilst arranging the visit Isaac said “I feel particularly passionate about this in terms of ensuring that every student has the encouragement to aspire to their very best.” We are very grateful that Isaac has given up his time to share his experience of applying to and studying at Oxford. Any students who feel that they would like to discuss opportunities like this further, should contact Miss Linsell.

Keep warm and have a safe weekend,

9 December 2022

I would like to start this week by celebrating our fantastic students and staff. I had the privilege of watching the federative production of ‘Wendy and Peter’ in the Theatre on Wednesday evening. It was the culmination of hours and hours of rehearsal and dedication and this shone through. We have some budding stars of the future, both in the acting department and musical support. I would like to say how proud I was to be Executive Headteacher and a huge thank you to the students and staff for their hard work. This goes for those on stage as well as those behind the scenes. I look forward to the next one! (no pressure Creative Arts Faculty!).

It is now only two school weeks until the Year 11 trial exams. Please can you support us by encouraging your children to use the two week break to relax but also to timetable in some revision too. It is important that these routines continue. I will cover in the newsletter after the break some procedural and logistical pieces of information. We want every student to get every mark they deserve and not have this ruined by breaking exam protocols, as this is an avoidable mistake.

Next week we have our Federative Christmas Concert at St John’s Church in Newport on Thursday, starting at 7.00 pm. There are other activities taking place such as Christmas Lunch on Wednesday, a Santa Dash on Friday as well as festive mufti. Details of all of these events are available on our social media platforms.

As a reminder, although we are embracing and enjoying some festive activities, we will be teaching up to the end of the day on Friday 16 December, so it will be a normal 3.10 pm finish. We return on Tuesday 3 January, and students need to ensure that they are in full uniform on time and ready to learn.

I hope you have a good weekend.

This week we have had performances of Peter Pan and Wendy at Medina Theatre.  The students have worked so hard during the year and their hard work has paid off!  I went to both performances and was blown away by both. A massive thank you to Mr Lyle, Mrs Peckham, Mrs Shorrock and Miss Elkin for all their hard work putting the show together. It was a very professional performance. The storyline of the performance was a family struggling with grief following the loss of their youngest child and the team decided that the chosen charity for the production was “Sands” – the UK’s leading pregnancy and baby loss charity. Over £300 was raised with the sale of the programme and tea lights.

When we return after Christmas year 11 will have their trial exams in the sports hall. They start the week beginning 9 January. Timetables will be given to students next week. They had an assembly today from Mrs Edwards on the expectations and guidance on what they need to do when they sit their exams.

As the weather is getting colder, please do remember that we do have school jumpers available to buy which can be worn under blazers. Coats can obviously be worn to school but are not allowed to be worn in the buildings. Please support us by discouraging your child(ren) to bring hoodies to school, they are not allowed to be worn and if they are, will be confiscated.

Next week the festivities begin.  We have our Christmas lunch from Chartwells after which the staff will be putting on a performance of their own pantomime!  Thursday evening we have our Christmas Concert at St John’s Church in Newport.  This is free entry so come along and join in with the festivities.  Friday we have Christmas themed mufti day and the Santa Dash.

Whilst all of these events are exciting in the lead up to Christmas, lessons will remain as normal and we expect our usual good behaviour and uniform from the students.

As a reminder, the last day of term is Friday 16 December. This will be a normal full school day, finishing at 3.10 pm. We come back to school on Tuesday 3 January

Have a lovely weekend.

Dear Students, Parents and Carers

As is now our Chrtistmas tradition, we are asking for donations for the local food bank over the remaining two weeks of term. If you are able to contribute, please could you bring in items to Reception. We will be delivering all contributions to the food bank before the end of term.

We are holding a Christmas dinner for students and staff on Thursday 15 December, a two course meal for £2.50!. We will be selling tickets in advance for this event and this will be the only food available at lunchtime on the day. Normal snack food will be available at breaktime only. If you qualify for free school meals, you will automatically get a ticket and I will be delivering these to students next week. The deadline for ticket sales is midday on Thursday 8 December. Student voice will also be fundraising and encouraging staff and students to wear Christmas jumpers on the last two days of term.

GCSE certificates for students from Medina and Carisbrooke will be available from VI Form Reception on Thursday 8 December during break and lunch. They will then be returned to Medina and Carisbrooke, so make sure you pick them up on Thursday. Certificates should be kept safely stored at home as you will need them for future jobs and University admissions and they are very expensive to replace from the exam boards. All secondary schools will be distributing certificates, so you need to contact your previous school to make arrangements to collect. A Level certificates are also available from Reception for former students to collect – we don’t keep them forever, so please pick them up ASAP.

Stay warm and have a safe weekend,

Year 11 are another week closer to their trial exams and therefore another week closer to the real exams in the Summer. Attendance in school and in lessons has a direct correlation to the outcomes for the students. It is essential that all Year 11 students attend every lesson, every day. I can not emphasise this enough. We do, and will with even more earnest, follow up on any student who is not in school and therefore not giving themselves the best opportunity of success. For the vast majority of students, they understand this and do this every day, day in, day out.

A final reminder that we have our Federative Production of Wendy and Peter on Wednesday 7 December and Thursday 8 December at 7.00 pm, in Medina Theatre. Please support our amazing students and staff by coming and seeing the culmination of hours and hours of practice and dedication. Tickets can be purchased from Medina Theatre. Our Creative Arts faculty have numerous events at this time of year which the students have worked very hard to rehearse for. We had a very successful event at Osborne House this week and we have the Christmas Concert, at St Johns Church in Newport on Thursday 15 December at 7.00 pm.

Flu immunisations are taking place for students in Years 7 – 9 on Wednesday 7 December.  If you haven’t already completed the consent form, here is the link to the letter and the consent form.  Without this, your child will be unable to receive the immunisation – which is a nasal spray rather than an injection.

Our social media platforms provide a wide range of information throughout the week, every week, from links to our Safeguarding and Digital Safeguarding pages on our website, upcoming activities, such as our Santa Dash fun run on Friday 16 December, details of exciting competitions and a plethora of good news stories and reviews. Links to our accounts can be found at the end of the newsletter email. I encourage you to follow them. Our website also has useful information on how to keep up to date with your child’s achievement points, behaviour points and attendance on our new Arbor Parent portal.

As a reminder, the last day of term is Friday 16 December. This will be a normal full school day, finishing at 3.10 pm. We come back to school on Tuesday 3 January (with Year 11 trial exams starting on Monday 9 January!).

I hope you have a good weekend

On Tuesday a group of students from Carisbrooke and Medina College and The Island VI Form performed at a concert at Osborne House. The students were fantastic and we are very proud of them. A huge thank you to Mrs Peckham and all involved in supporting the students. You can read about this further on in the newsletter.

The end of term is fastly approaching and we have many events planned. Next week is the performance of Wendy and Peter Pan at Medina Theatre. Tickets are still available and you can order them via Medina Theatre. The following week we have our Christmas Concert at St John’s Church in Newport. This event is free to attend and is promised to be a full evening of Christmas festivities. On the last day of term, we have a Christmas themed Mufti day and also our Santa Dash. This is where students run two km from Carisbrooke College to Carisbrooke Castle and return. Christmas attire is encouraged! For your child to sign up for this, please sign up via School Gateway. All students receive a Christmas hat and a hot chocolate after the run.

Our canteen is serving Christmas lunch on Wednesday 14 December and you can see the full menu in the newsletter.

Flu immunisations are taking place for students in years 7 – 9 on Tuesday 6 December. If you haven’t already completed the consent form, there is a link for information on how to do so in the newsletter. Without this, your child will not be unable to receive the vaccine – which is a nasal spray rather than an injection.

Please see our website for useful information on how to keep up to date with your child’s achievement points, behaviour points and attendance on our new Parent Portals. There is a positive correlation between students’ attendance and their outcomes. Research has shown that students with less than 95% attendance on average achieve a grade lower than those students with attendance greater than 95%. I am concerned about the drop in attendance over the last couple of weeks with all year groups but more so with year 11. They have their trial exams when we come back after Christmas. Students need to be in their lessons.

Please remember, whilst we have all of these exciting events planned, we still have two weeks of learning for students and expectations around behaviour and full uniform remain the same.

Have a lovely weekend.

Christmas at Osborne

Christmas at Osborne

On Tuesday our ‘SING’ groups from Carisbrooke College, Medina College and The Island IV Form came together to perform at Osborne House as part of a ‘Christmas at Osborne ’ event. The event was organised by the IOW Music Hub in partnership with English Heritage.

The performance took place in the historic Durbar Room, the very room used by Queen Victoria and her family for their own Christmas performances  – a truly unique performance opportunity for everyone involved!

Students performed ‘You will be found’, a song they have been preparing for our upcoming performance of ‘Wendy and Peter Pan’, along with the quirky ‘I want a hippopotamus for Christmas’ and Adolphe Adam’s classic ‘O Holy Night’.’

We have included a photo from a book located in the Durbar Room which has an extract of an interview with Dorothy Blake, who was born in 1866 and was the daughter of Queen Victoria’s land agent. Here Dorothy describes her memories of Christmas time at Osborne.

Our students performed beautifully. Mrs Brear and Miss Peckham are very proud of them all.
