Head of School’s Blog – 18 March 2022

18 March 2022

It was lovely to welcome Emilie Smith from the Student Finance team at the University of Portsmouth, to visit us in person yesterday. She delivered a very informative presentation to Year 13 students who have applied to University this year and followed this with a parents’ presentation later in the evening, which is attached below for any of you who missed it. The information that she shared is extremely important to both Students and Parents when it comes to making an application to Student Finance and the arrangements for repayments in the future. Please take a few moments to view the information – there are a lot of myths surrounding this specialised funding and some of the links shared in the presentation are very helpful when it comes to students setting budgets and expected living expenses.

Student Funding Presentation

As you are probably aware, absences are high at the moment and this is creating an additional workload for staff. It is the students’ responsibility to communicate with us. Thank you to those who are getting in touch to notify us of their absence. However, there are still a large number of students who aren’t doing this. If a student is not able to attend a lesson, please let us know by either phoning in on 01983 522886 (Option 1) or emailing:

vi-student-services@iwef.org.uk.

I’m sure that all students have noticed the ongoing decoration and refurbishment of the VI Form buildings, over a million pounds is being spent over the next couple of years.

  • All classrooms are being redecorated, new carpets fitted and new LED lights with motion sensors.
  • Windows and doors repaired or replaced
  • New heating system installed
  • Currently we are just finishing decorating the upper common room, totally refurbishing reception and turning the stage area into a drama studio

Thank you for your understanding as these improvements continue.

Hopefully we will all enjoy a sunny Spring weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 18 March 2022

18 March 2022

Welcome to my update for this week.

Firstly, thank you to all of the Year 9 students and parents/carers who came to our in person KS4 Pathways Evening on Wednesday evening. We were pleased, from the feedback we had, that you found it useful and that it has sparked some conversations about the potential future opportunities. If you were unable to attend, then your child should have brought home the Pathways booklet and more details can be found on our website: Pathways Information. A link to a straw poll form has been emailed to all year 9 parents and we ask that this is completed and submitted by Wednesday 23 March. We hope that our Year 9 students also enjoyed the ‘Music morning’ held in the Theatre today, which will have also given them some more insight into that curriculum area.

There are only just under eight calendar weeks (six school weeks), before the Year 11 exam season starts. Students need to make sure they are taking their revision at home seriously, attending revision sessions that are being run and need to make sure that sessions that are offered over the Easter break are used to maximise their learning. 100% attendance is vital for all year groups, but especially so for Year 11, as they need to use every opportunity to ask questions and share concerns as well.

We have a Federation performance of Treasure Island on Tuesday, 29 and Thursday, 31 March, which is being held in the Hall at Carisbrooke College. Medina College students will be starring in the leading roles on the Thursday evening performance. Tickets can be bought through the School Gateway.

Please make sure you follow our social media sites on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as these are updated frequently during the week with exciting news stories and a wealth of information.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Head of School’s blog – 18 March 2022

18 March 2022

It does not seem possible we are halfway through this half term. Year 11’s have eight weeks before the exam season starts. The first exams in the week beginning 9 May are in health and social studies and child development and care. The first big whole year group exam is the following week with the first of the science exams. The year 11 students need to make the most of the time they have left and a timetable of revision sessions during the Easter break will be sent home shortly.

It was lovely to see so many year 9 students and parents at the Pathways evening on Tuesday. Thank you to Mr Krista, the Federated Deputy Headteacher, for delivering an insightful presentation on the process. If you were unable to attend, you can find a presentation and the Pathways booklet on our website: Pathways Information. Don’t forget to get your straw poll forms in. Information has been sent out about making appointments for the virtual parents evening on Wednesday 30 March.

I would like to congratulate Lucy C in year 9 who took part in the national trampolining finals in Macclesfield on Saturday and with a score of 54.25 came 11th out of 42 which makes her the 11th best for her age in the whole of the country. What a fantastic Achievement! Well done Lucy

A group of year 9 students went to Southampton University for a careers event. The students competed against 3 other schools in challenges by a company called UNILOC. The challenges were designed to encourage communication and teamwork skills. They had to design an app for future students to use to help guide them through making career choices. They had to identify the main features that would be most useful, design a logo and talk about how the app would function. The challenges concluded with a five minute presentation to some course leaders in a dragons den style format. They stole the show and came first after an amazing animated and confident presentation. We are pleased to say that Medina followed closely in 2nd place. Whilst they were there the students were shown around the university and able to talk to student ambassadors about life at university. It was really useful to be able to ask questions and see what a real university looks like. Most of the students were blown away by how big the campus was but also the range of courses and things to do. A huge thank you to Mrs Young who was the trip leader and Mrs Norris for her support. Well done to George C, Elleanor C, Sophie Byers, Megan B, Joanna M, Harry M, Amy A, Hadley R, Millie T and Apryl H.

We have a Federation performance of Treasure Island on Tuesday 29 and Thursday 31 March which is being held at Carisbrooke College. Carisbrooke College students will be starring in the lead roles on the Tuesday. Tickets can be bought through the school gateway. It promises to be an excellent evening.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week – Year 7 Samuel B, Year 8 Mia P, Year 9 Twiggy E, Year 10 Maisie -Rae H and Benjamin M and Year 11 Sam I.

Have a lovely weekend.

Year 7 Basketball

Year 7 Basketball

On Thursday 17 March 2022 the Isle of Wight Schools Basketball Tournaments were reinstated for the first time in three years.  It was the year 7 tournament that took place first with other year groups taking part over the next few weeks.

Five teams in total took part and the tournament was played in good spirit and sportsmanship throughout.  Carisbrooke opened their account with a confident win over Medina 8-0 thanks to some excellent shooting from Shai B, Liam G and Charlie W.  In the second game, Christ the King College were our opponents but, again, some excellent shooting from Daniel P, Shai B and Charlie G gave Carisbrooke the win 8-4.  However, it was the firm defence throughout by Lincoln O, Theo N and Liam D that supported the team in preventing Christ the King from getting more opportunities.

In the third game, Carisbrooke put on another quality display to beat Ryde A 8-0 with Liam G and Mason S-T adding to the score sheet and Jack G trying his hardest to prevent Ryde from scoring by tying his shoe lace in the middle of the court.

In the final game of the tournament Carisbrooke were to play the favourites, The Bay, who had so far crushed every team they had played.  However, after the first 6 minutes Carisbrooke were 6-4 up thanks for a fantastic team display both defensively and offensively. Liam G and Shai B again shooting brilliantly throughout.  However, with a few minutes left Carisbrooke started to get tired and The Bay began to find some easier bakets close to the hoop and eventually ran out 18-8 winners leaving Carisbrooke to claim the runners up position.

Carisbrooke were outstanding throughout and really impressed everyone watching.  Oakley W who helped coach and support the team throughout was a credit to the school due to showing such commitment to the basketball programme at Carisbrooke.

Well done to all of you, you made a coach very proud.

Students and parents had the opportunity this week to attend a Student Finance presentation, delivered by Emilie Smith from the University of Portsmouth

The presentations were fantastic opportunities to find out more about this specialised funding, how to apply and how repayments will be made in the future.

Copies of the presentations can be found below for anyone who missed the live presentations. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Student Services.

Miss Keogh is shaving her head!

Miss Keogh is shaving her head!

Miss Keogh was thinking of ways in which she could raise money for the Disaster Emergency Committee who are helping the people of Ukraine.

Families fleeing the conflict have left their homes with only the items they were able to carry. The DEC aim to provide food, water, shelter, healthcare and protection.

She has come up with the idea of getting staff, students and parents/carers to sponsor her and she is going to shave off all of her hair at the end of this term!

If you would like to donate to this very worthy cause and support Miss Keogh’s hair loss, you can donate via School Gateway or on her just giving page (below). Any amount that you can spare, no matter how small, will be so very much appreciated.

– £10 could provide essential hygiene supplies for 1 person for one month

– £50 could provide blankets for 4 families to keep them warm

– £100 could provide emergency food for 2 families for one month

Miss Keogh is thrilled that she has just reached £500 in sponsorship! Can you help her increase this and get closer towards her goal of £2000? Thank you, in advance, for any support you can give.
