Head of School’s Blog – 8 March 2024

Welcome to the blog for this week. It does not seem possible we are halfway through this half term. Year 11s have eight weeks before the exam season starts, including the Easter break. The first exams in the week beginning 6 May are in fashion and health and social studies. The first big whole year group exam is biology on 10 May. The year 11 students need to make the most of the time they have left and a timetable of revision sessions during the Easter break will be sent home shortly.

This week the year 11 students who study Food and Nutrition at GCSE have been doing their practical exam. The standard of cooking and presentation has been phenomenal. I have had the privilege of tasting their hard work! I have been treated to various lasagnes, pies, chicken kievs, paella, curries, wraps, kebabs, and pasta dishes. All students made their own pasta and fresh bread with some making pesto and chutneys. Those who made desserts produced bread and butter puddings, profiteroles (with various flavours of cream inside), rhubarb and apple pies and even some patisserie standard macarons. Their homemade jams and custards were very tasty. I am so proud of them all. Huge thank you to all the staff that have supported them. Thank you to all the parents that have supported the ingredients and tested various versions of their final menus. In my opinion there are a number of them who could become Mitchelin Star rated chefs of the future!

Last weekend a group of students attended a trip to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton for a performance of Blood Brothers.  The students were a credit to Carisbrooke College and I’d like to thank them and the staff involved for taking time out of their weekend to attend an educational trip.

Year 7 had their core subject trial exams on Tuesday and this gave them a taster of what to expect during year 11 when they have their final GCSE exams.  Whilst it is a few years away yet, it sets the scene and shows them what is expected of them and is good practice for the coming years. The students were amazing and took it all in their stride.

It was lovely to see so many year 9 students and parents at the Pathways Evening on Thursday. Thank you to all the parents and students that attended and the staff who made it such an informative event. The deadline for the pathways form is next Friday 15 March.

We are looking to hold a Parent Voice meeting on Thursday 21 March. This is open to all parents/carers and is an opportunity for you to ask questions and/or raise any concerns that you may have regarding Carisbrooke College. Please email donna.keogh@iwef.org.uk to confirm your attendance.

Next Tuesday we have 81 year 10 students on a trip to see a performance of Macbeth in Southsea and a mop up session for year 9 students for the Teen Booster.  Another busy week here in school.

Head of School’s Blog – 8 March 2024

Dear Students, Parents & Carers,

We are halfway through this half term already and we have 14 school days until the Arts based exams and 40 school days until the main exams start for Year 13. Year 12, you have 65 school days until your end of year exams start.

Therefore, I hope that all of you have revision plans in place? This means that resources are created with plenty of time in the coming weeks to go over them again and again, burning the knowledge into your long term memory. Hard work pays off.

We will be launching the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ – half an A level) to Year 12 over the coming weeks. There will be an extended assembly around Easter to provide full details. Part of this launch includes the current Year 13 EPQ students exhibiting their projects in the Hall on Tuesday 12 March, from 2.30pm. This is your chance to see what they have done and ask any questions about the qualification.

If you are currently studying two A Levels, you need to think about what you will be picking up to still be classed as a full time student, could it be the EPQ?

Hopefully we will all enjoy a sunny weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 8 March 2024

We now have just 14 days left of the Spring term, please make a note in your diaries that we break up for the Easter Holidays on Thursday 28th March as the Friday of that week is a bank holiday.

This week I had a meeting with the catering team to discuss the exciting menus they have planned for the summer term. During the meeting, they mentioned that there is a significant number of students who are entitled to free school meals who are not using this entitlement. If your child is eligible for free school meals, they have £2.95 a day to spend in the canteen which is enough to purchase a meal and a drink. If they don’t use this money, it does not accumulate, so please make sure you are taking advantage of this. Take a look at the current menus on our website here; there is a wide variety of hot and cold options every day at break and lunch time.

We are aware there is a very small minority of students who are abusing our toilet facilities. This is clearly an area of the school where we cannot have CCTV footage, so this makes it challenging for us to catch the perpetrators. Can I ask that we all reiterate the importance of respecting the facilities so everyone can use them in a pleasant manner. Looking at the local news and reports from other secondary schools, sadly this disrespect for toilets does not seem to be uncommon at the moment. On the topic of events that are happening outside of school, we are aware that some fake Medina College Tik Tok accounts have been set up. We do our best to investigate these and report them to Tik Tok to be blocked. However, I would like your support with this, so ask that if you come across such an account, can you please also report them so we can shut these down as quickly as possible.

This week we have had some amazing activities taking place such as: activities for National Careers Week, the Maritime Roadshow, World Book Day, Athletic Championships and other sporting fixtures and our Year 7 trial exams where I have had reported back to me that behaviour was amazing. Well done Year 7!

Also this week, we had the Year 9 Pathways Evening. All of the information that was shared can be found on our website here. Please remember that forms need to be returned by Friday 15 March at the latest.

Finally, I would like to finish off by congratulating our Hot Chocolate Friday winners this week for 100% attendance in the previous week or top achievement points. Well done to: Ruben, Sebby, Billy, Tom, Ethan, Ellie, Molly, David, Lewis and Ferne.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year

As part of Carisbrooke College’s Chinese New Year celebrations in February, Mandarin teacher Miss Yao gave out traditional red envelopes (or Hong Bao) to some of the highest achievers in the year 10 GCSE group.

Red envelopes are traditionally distributed to youngsters in China and are a way of bringing good luck and fortune to those that receive them.

Lessons at GCSE are infused with culture and fun as well as knowledge and this GCSE group are continuing to impress everyone with their language skills. We look forward to watching them take their Mandarin abilities to the next level with the help of Miss Yao and Mr Briscoe over the next year.

Head of School’s Blog – 1 March 2024

Welcome to March; it is hard to believe that we are almost a quarter of the way through the year already!

For Year 11, they only have 19 school days of this final full half term unaffected by their real GCSE exams, so it is important that they are ensuring every day counts.

Well done to Year 10 for their conduct in their trial exams this week, very impressive. Good luck to Year 7 for their first taste of exams next Wednesday.

Please remember that Wednesday 6 March is our Year 9 Pathways Evening between 5.00 – 7.00 pm. During this evening, important information will be given about how Year 9 can choose their GCSE options, so please do try to attend.

Due to a lot of bugs and illnesses going around, attendance has been particularly low this week. It is really important to ensure, where possible, that students attend school because attendance of below 90% can affect a child’s GCSE grade by one whole grade. Guidance as to how to improve attendance can be found here: Attendance Guidance for Parents/Carers. I would also like to draw your attention to the latest new release from the Department of Education here. This explains how from August 2024 they are raising the costs of fines for term time absence. All fines are handled by the local authority who decide whether an absence reaches the threshold for a fine to be issued.

I have had a few questions about toilets this week, so can I take this opportunity to reassure parents that there are multiple toilets open for students throughout the day. On top of the unisex toilet, we also have four separate toilet blocks for girls and two for boys. The single sex blocks are only closed for cleaning from 1.10 pm for about half an hour.

Congratulations to all the sports teams this week: well done for playing all the fixtures you have despite the rain.

Finally, well done to our Hot Chocolate Friday winners: Emma, Harry, Ethan, Maddie, Logan, Alfie, Sophie, Ethan, Billy and Harry, who all secured a place either through 100% attendance in the last week or being the top achievement point winners for their year group.

Have a lovely weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 1 March 2024

Welcome to the blog for this week.

As part of the support we have for Carisbrooke following our Ofsted, faculty leads are working with leads in HISP, looking at how formative and summative assessment is used to check pupils’ understanding – an area for development in our Ofsted report.

Year 10 had the start of their trial exams this week.  These exams are an excellent opportunity for the students to experience working in exam conditions and how the exam papers look. The students were well behaved and respectful of each other and I hope they continue this behaviour into next week.

On Thursday 7 March, we have the Pathways Evening for parents and students in year 9.  This is an opportunity for parents and students to speak to individual subject teachers about the lessons on offer to study in KS4.  Please try to attend this event as there will be valuable information shared to help your child make their final decision for their subject choices.

Next week, our year 11 students have their Food Technology practical exams.  I have the pleasure of being one of the official ‘tasters’ and look forward to savouring the delights from their menus.  Good luck to them all!

We will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 7 March – lots of exciting things will be available for students to get involved in. Information will be shared with the students on Monday.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners this week.  Year 7 – Evie, Summer, Tulisa, Year 8 – Jackson, Year 9 Liam, Year 10 – Xanda and Year 11 Bethany and Mia.

Have a lovely weekend.

Student Reporters at The Isle of Wight Story Festival

Student Reporters at The Isle of Wight Story Festival

Report by Ruby Hendey

Students from The Island VI Form attended the IW Story Festival which took place during half term from the 15 – 17 February at Quay Arts. It was a brilliant few days packed full with inspiring authors and storytellers, amongst those being the famous author of ‘Horrid Henry’ Francesca Simon, stand-up comedian and author Alasdair Beckett-King and the Great Great Grandson of Charles Dickens, Gerald Dickens, who read out the winning stories of the Island wide Year Five story competition. The Festival also featured local talent, with the Island’s Kieran Larwood, and Southampton-based Nazneen Ahmed Pathak.

Each student was allocated a particular performance to watch and to write a review of, some even getting the opportunity to interview the performer afterwards in the green room. Year 13 student, Jake Curran was on the committee for the Festival and helped out in organising the event.

The VI Form student reporter team included Cerys Briscoe, Ellie Chambers, Summer Donovan, Jess Freeston, Ruby Hendey, Rhianna Honey, Willow Samuel, Lilly Summer, and Emily Williams.

Thank you to student photographers Taylor Knight and Makenzi Holder for the images below of Francesca Simon, author of the Horrid Henry series and James Knight, BAFTA nominated film maker.

Annual Basketball Tournament

Annual Basketball Tournament

On Tuesday 20 February, our year 11 boys basketball team took part in the annual basketball competition at Medina College. In their first game, they took on local rivals and home team Medina and in what was a very tight affair, Carisbrooke managed to sneak through winning the game by one point, thanks to a three pointer from Ashton.

In the second game, Carisbrooke carried on their positive start and beat The Bay (current defending champions) 8-2 thanks to some more impressive scoring from Ashton and solid defence from Harry, Alfie and Louis.

The third game saw a change of venue in the shape of a smaller court which would account for Alfies three point shot which went over the top of the backboard, but in the end Ryde Academy were stronger throughout and more consistent on the rebounding and scoring and eventually took a convincing 13-3 win.

Due to other results, Carisbrooke still had a chance to win the tournament if they beat Cowes in their final game. The game proved to be another close encounter with some excellent play from Matthew and Charlie and the rest of the team chipping in with good all round play. Unfortunately, the final score saw Cowes win 4-0 and, as a result, any chance of winning the tournament for Carisbrooke was gone.

Overall, the boys did very well and maybe surprised themselves with how close they came in the end. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the boys for taking part and to make a special mention to Charlie and Ashton for being a constant positive contribution to basketball at Carisbrooke over the last five years. I am sure they will make the Carisbrooke Hall of Fame someday.

Mr Peake.

Head of School’s Blog – 23 February 2024

I would like to start off by wishing you all a warm welcome back after half term, it has been lovely to have students back in school and completing excellent learning.

This week we had a very busy Year 9 Parents’ Evening on Tuesday and Year 11 have been completing two days of mock exams in English, maths and science. Next week we have Year 10 completing their first set of exams on the GCSE courses they have chosen to study.

Don’t forget that on Wednesday 6 March, 5-7pm we have the Pathway Evening for Year 9, an evening designed to assist them in choosing the right subjects for their GCSE courses.

This week I have been delivering assemblies on ambition and, now we are half way through the academic year, it is important that all students reflect upon their great ambition. What is it they want to achieve? What are the barriers that are getting in the way? How can school help them realise their ambitions? And finally, understanding that along the way we will all fail at things, but the lessons we learn at these points help us improve for the future. I know as a school our ambition for all students is to be the best version of themselves.

I would like to finish off by saying a special congratulations to Sophie for her impressive performance in Phantom of the Opera outside of school. I would also like to say well done to our Hot Chocolate Friday winners who gained a place for either 100% attendance in the last week or were top achievement points winners in their year group. This week we celebrated with Alfie, Dean, Naomi, Lily, Sammy, Rosie, Pip and Scott.

Have a lovely weekend.
