Head of School’s Blog – 11 February 2022

11 February 2022

Just wanted to talk about internet safety this week, and share some simple advice to keep you safe:

– Remember not to share passwords with people or be tricked into sharing answers to security questions, no-one needs to know your mothers maiden name or your first pets name.

– Keep information private: Look at your settings on social media applications and consider what you are sharing and with whom.

– Stay safe on the move: Be aware that when you are out and about joining WiFi networks that they might not be safe and might be designed to capture information from you.

– Online reputation: Anything you send or post online is potentially shared forever. Make sure that something you say or post doesn’t cost you a job or your reputation in the future. Or that something you share with an individual is later used to bully you into doing other things.  If you wouldn’t want your loved ones to see it or read it, maybe you shouldn’t post it?

Further advice can be found at: Internet Matters

I would also like to draw your attention to the VI Form Exams Timetable 2022 which is available on our website. Your teachers will start to prepare you for the journey towards these exams, please engage with them. Being properly prepared builds confidence and is the best way to ensure that you get the most successful outcomes.

Have a good weekend.

Head of School’s Blog – 11 February 2022

11 February 2022

We are extremely pleased that we are able to offer so many extracurricular activities at the moment in a variety of interests and hobby areas. These are particularly important as they give students the opportunity to broaden their social circle / friendships. Spending time with other students enjoying the same interest is a very valuable and positive experience. The staff also very much enjoy being able to provide these enriching clubs.

A reminder to Year 11 parents/carers that it is Parents’ Evening next week, where virtual online meetings are available with your child’s subject teachers. Please make sure you have booked appointments to discuss their recent trial results and what they need to do in these last few months to still make a difference. There is still time! (To make appointments and for them to make a difference!)

Next week we will be holding celebration assemblies for each of our year groups. This is a great way to end the term and the students and staff do enjoy success being shared. Next Thursday, 17 February, also marks ‘National Random Acts of Kindness Day’ – What can you do as a random act of kindness to make someone else’s day better?

Although the political message around COVID-19 is beginning to change, it is important that we continue to follow the current guidance. Anyone with symptoms needs to isolate and arrange a PCR test. Anyone who tests positive on an Asymptomatic LFD test also need to isolate and follow the Government guidance. Good hand and respiratory hygiene continue to be important.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

11 February 2022

It does not seem possible that we have just one more week of the half term left!

Assemblies and PSHE lessons this week have been themed around Mental Health Awareness week. A huge thank you to the staff who have delivered these. Next week I am looking forward to our celebration assemblies. Our students have worked hard this half term and it is a pleasure to reward them.

We had an artist in school this week working with our students in a “Mark Making” workshop. I was fortunate enough to visit the year 11 group whilst they were working with her. Some of their creations were very interesting and very powerful. You can read more about this in the Biosphere Blog below.

Pantomime rehearsals are back up and running afterschool. It is lovely to see the students so excited and committed to the performance. I am very much looking forward to the evening performance on Tuesday 29th March.

Don’t forget to get your appointments made for the year 11 parents evening next Thursday.

Biosphere Blog – 11 February 2022

Biosphere Blog – 11 February 2022

‘This week we have had lots of fun exploring mark making using natural materials. All the materials were collected in the biosphere along the old railways of Brading marshes. It is great to be able to introduce the students to different ways of working and using natural materials in their work’.

Trudie Wilson, Artist in Residence

It was a real joy to see so many students engaging with the workshops this week. Classes had the opportunity to explore the ways in which our Biosphere can inspire us and allow us to create beautiful marks. We were all so impressed to see how students worked collaboratively and stepped out of their comfort zone to allow them to respond in a more abstract manner than what they are used to.

University of Southampton Visit

University of Southampton Visit

25 students from Medina College attended their first University visit on the Learn with Us programme. The University of Southampton were super excited to have us!

We had a great day learning about University life, touring the campus and looking at the different courses available. Students created a poster and presented it to the rest of the group, followed by a game of ‘The Chase’ which was an interactive game, answering questions on what they had learnt throughout their visit.

The students had a fantastic day, making memories and starting to think about what their futures could look like.

Speak Out Challenge

Speak Out Challenge

Last week, we had the Speakers Trust in to complete a workshop with a group of Year 9 students. The workshop was an opportunity for students to learn and build on skills that they require to speak out in front of their peers. The aim of the workshop was to build confidence and give students the awareness of the skills required to speak out as well as preparing for future speaking and listening exams that they will complete.

I was immensely proud of how the students conducted themselves, pushed themselves out of their comfort zone but were always willing to attempt the challenges, even if they were unsure!

We learnt so much about each other and I witnessed those who may not have chosen to work together, build relationships, rapport and respect for one another.

Guest speaker for English, law and media students

Guest speaker for English, law and media students

Thank you to Ian Harrison for visiting our English, law and media students this week.

Ian Harrison is a lawyer for Reach PLC and works for the Daily Mirror.  He visited VI Form students to discuss the role of journalism in our democratic society and the balance between Press freedom and the Law. Ian drew on a range of books, historical development of journalism as we know it today and his own experiences to illustrate how important trusted news sources like Newspapers are for the effective functioning of our society.

Students engaged in the discussion and really enjoyed hearing first hand what life is like for a Lawyer working in the field of journalism and media. We are very grateful to Ian for giving up his time to come in and visit us.

Agriculture Careers Event

Agriculture Careers Event

From September 2022, Medina College will be one of just three schools in the country to offer the Cambridge iGCSE in Agriculture. This presents our students with the most wonderful opportunity to study something a little different and get a head start on a future career within the agricultural industries. To launch the course and celebrate the opportunities within agriculture, a careers event was held at the school on Tuesday 8 February.

The event introduced year 9 students to the many different pathways within the sector of agriculture and ensured that they all had the opportunity to ask questions and explore all of the opportunities available, particularly here on the Isle of Wight.

Students were able to see how the new qualification that is available to them could lead to many different jobs and experiences and really brought to life how exciting this opportunity is.

We are very grateful to the local businesses and exhibitors who kindly gave up their time to attend. Thank you to:

  • Hannah Kenway from Farm Vets
  • Duxmore Farm
  • Duxmore Botanics
  • Briddlesford Farm
  • Farmers Union
  • NFU
  • APS Produce
  • Cheverton Farm
  • Skinners Farm
  • Idlecombe and Skinners Farm
  • Isle of Wight Agricultural Society
  • Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

Agriculture course leader, Victoria Lloyd said “Students had a great time finding out about all of the different careers they could choose from and asked lots of fabulous questions. We had so many fantastic people willing to give up their time to come in and meet our students. It was very informative for everyone involved.”

Careers leader, Naomi Smy, said “It was great to promote the careers and associated further and higher educational opportunities within the agriculture sector. It planted a seed for many students who are now considering some of the options that were presented to them. Thank you to the exhibitors, who kindly gave up their valuable time to support our event. Many of whom regarded the morning as a way of investing in their future workforce.”
