Food is vital for us all to sustain life, but here at the IWEF we believe Food is the centre of family and friends. Enjoying the food you make and then eating together brings a whole new level of enjoyment.
In Food Preparation and Nutrition we look at the skills needed to prepare a range of dishes which are suitable for the whole family to enjoy together. Students will enhance their knife skills by progressing the difficulty of the dishes they prepare throughout years 7, 8 and 9. Students then opt to take Food at GCSE where they enhance their practical skills to a whole new level.
Understanding the functions of the foods we put into our bodies is very important, especially currently where childhood obesity is a worldwide problem. Our aim is to provide our students with a broad practical education where they are then able to share well balanced dishes with their families.
Living on the Isle of Wight, where we pride ourselves on local produce, sharing this with our students through our herb and vegetable patch is a key belief of our team. This allows our students to understand where and how food is grown.
Here at the IWEF, ensuring our students are fit and healthy is of great importance. Therefore, we ensure we provide a high-quality food education. Students are provided with a Food lesson every week where they will have the opportunity to learn a vast range of practical skills. The students are taught by subject specialist teachers with some even being qualified chefs.
Throughout years 7,8 and 9 students learn how to create well balanced meals while making food from scratch. Students can adapt and develop each recipe to ensure it is suitable for their needs.
The core theory is covered in years 7,8 and 9 with specific focus on the eatwell guide, government guidelines along with vitamins and minerals. These core elements are then developed throughout GCSE where the students have an opportunity to develop their skills even further, looking at butchery, pastry making and the science behind the functions of food.
Each year the quality of Food outcomes is developing to meet and exceed the tasks set. We are committed to teach, develop and perfect a wide range of preparation skills.
