Intent

Business Studies is the past, the present and the future. Business Studies prepares the students for the competitive world of employment by introducing them to the concepts of business as well as identifying how the course will impact and be used in their everyday work life.

By incorporating skill sets from every department, from Maths and English, through to History and Geography, Business Studies allows the students of The Isle of Wight Education Federation an insight into their future in a way that no other subject does.

A qualification in Business Studies will open doors to interviews and opportunities in every possible avenue of enterprise. Business Studies is an outstanding addition to any student’s curriculum vitae and in many cases the course can be a life changing experience.

In order to achieve the very best possible outcomes, Business Studies is committed to providing students with extra-curricular support after school, specifically tailored resources and teaching from practitioners with experience and qualifications in business and economics. Pupils have the opportunity to complete projects which are observed and judged by not only their teachers, but by successful business associates in both management and an entrepreneurial capacity.

Implementation

Business studies is a dynamic, millennium relevant subject providing the very highest in career focused intervention. During their time studying Business, students are taught the following:

  • Business Entrepreneurship – Student create their own business models to create a new product or service.
  • Financial Education – Detailed financial education looking at all aspects of business finance, preparing them for the rigours of entrepreneurship.
  • Industry relevant communication technology skills – Presentations and professional communication are the cornerstone of Business Studies. Students are taught how to use and analyse balance sheets, cash flow forecasts etc, alongside the impacts on businesses of the continuous development of technology.
  • Presentation and Interview skills – You cannot get more relevant skills for future success than the presentation and interview intervention featured in the business curriculum. Students are taught the art of a successful presentation and are required to deliver a professional presentation as part of their course. They also develop a secure understanding of the training and motivation employees have available to them to create a more productive workplace.
  • Creativity – Decoding the world of marketing and online creativity, preparing students for entry into the most dynamic and fastest growing sector of employment in the developed world. ‘The Apprentice’ and ‘Dragon’s Den’ projects allow students to enhance their own learning to apply them in real life scenarios and hone their creative skills.
  • Growth mind-sets and an industry relevant grounding to individual aspiration and achievement – Business Studies allows the students to build their confidence and focus on their future careers and motivations, providing growth mind-sets which can help them succeed in other areas of the curriculum.
