Welcome to this week’s newsletter

Lots to celebrate this week – Carisbrooke College came 2nd in the Interschool Team Show Jumping competition last Friday. Well done to Jessica and Amelia in year 10 and Freya in year 9 who took part. They were all in the placings individually with Jessica finishing 3rd and Amelia 5th in their section. Freya did incredibly well winning her section.

Congratulations to Grace and Eleanor who were a credit to Carisbrooke College. They were invited down on Tuesday 24 May to meet HRH The Earl of Wessex. This was on the back of the journalism workshops project they have been involved in with Independent Arts. A huge thanks to Mrs Buckett for making this happen!

Medina hosted the Isle of Wight Education Federation’s Business Innovation Challenge on Thursday. I was disappointed that I was unable to take up my invitation to be on the judging panel and, on hearing how fantastic all the students were, I was even more so! A member of staff emailed me to say “Both Medina College and Carisbrooke College students were amazing. You would have been very proud”. Thank you to Mrs Mackett for enabling the students to have such a brilliant experience. Well done to everyone who took part.

We are very proud to hear that Millie in year 9 will be in the Jubilee Parade in London for the Queen’s Jubilee. Millie is a member of the Starlight Academy who are taking part in the ceremony. What a fantastic opportunity for her. Not only is she part of a once in a lifetime event she will get to see Ed Sheeran and George Ezra at the gig that is taking place too. Looking forward to hearing more about her experience and hopefully some pictures.

Year 11 students have continued to be amazing this week. Their attitude and behaviour in the exams and in lessons in between has been excellent. Please continue to encourage your child to revise for their exams and if they have any concerns, to contact the year office. The first week back after the half term break is another intensive one for them. Breakfast will continue to be from 7.45 am to year 11 who have morning exams. It does not seem possible that they have less than two school weeks left in compulsory education!

You should have received information on the Year 8 virtual Parents’ Evening which is Thursday 9 June between 4.00 – 7.00 pm. Letters and links to the system have been emailed home. Thank you to all of you that have booked appointments already. If you have not yet done so, then please do book them as this is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress so far this year.

A gentle reminder that in the first week back after half term, Year 8 students will be having their HPV vaccinations in school on Tuesday 7 June and year 9 on Wednesday 8 June. If you would like your child to receive this vaccination and haven’t yet completed the consent form, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Congratulations to our top achievement point winners for last week – Year 7 Zach and Tali, Year 8 Bethany, Year 9 Hollie and Year 10 Jessica and Lennon.

I hope you have a lovely half term and enjoy the extended bank holiday weekend for the platinum Jubilee.

27 May 2022

Have a great break, remember to get the balance right between revision, exercise and sleep.  I know it is a challenging time, but it will soon be over and you can enjoy the summer knowing you have done everything you could to get results that reflect your talents and hard work.

Thank you for attending the UCAS Discover events this week, I will be launching an introduction to UCAS, Apprenticeships or Work in a presentation to Year 12 on Thursday 9th June.  We have attached some of the UCAS discover videos to the website if you were unable to attend the live event. You can access these here

I have returned to work part time for two days this week and will hopefully be full time after half term. I look forward to seeing you in lessons and around the VI Form before the summer holidays.

27 May 2022

Welcome to the final blog post of this half term.

Yesterday, I had the honour of being one of the judges for our Year 10 Isle of Wight Education Federation Business Innovation Challenge. The students had been tasked with researching the breakfast market and then designing and creating a product which they felt could have a place in the market. There was a large variety of ideas on offer including smoothies, one of which was a full English breakfast smoothie(!), breakfast/protein bars, modified versions of cereals including some using locally sourced produce, some ethically manufactured and a new concept butter utensil for making hard butter easier to spread on toast. The students had obviously all worked extremely hard in their groups to produce these products and were very brave in showcasing them and explaining their reasonings to a group of staff and external industry professionals.

Year 11 are another week into their GCSE exams. Please continue to encourage them to use half term to both revise and recharge, so that they give themselves the very best opportunities when they return. It is vital that the students are on time to these, so please also encourage them to take advantage of the free breakfast offer in the canteen on the morning of their exams. Details of the Year 11 Leavers assembly will be shared after the half term break. As always the full details regarding exams can be found on our website, linked here.

Letters regarding Year 8 virtual Parents’ Evening on Wednesday, 8 June, have now been shared so please do book your appointments.

Please make sure that you are familiar with the plans for the IW Festival weekend. The letter that has been sent to parents/carers can be found here.

We return on Monday, 6 June and I will expect to see all students arriving on time, in full school uniform, with their equipment, ready to learn.

I hope you have a lovely extended Bank Holiday weekend when it arrives.

Interschool Team Show Jumping Competition

Interschool Team Show Jumping Competition

Friday 20 May saw the return of the Interschool Team Show Jumping Competition having not run for the last two years due to Covid-19. Miss Begley and Miss Caddick had the pleasure of looking after the Carisbrooke and Medina riders. Phoebe T, Bailey P and Freya L made up the Medina team and Jessica I, Amelia M and Freya R the Carisbrooke team.

Unlucky poles meant that the Medina team were not in the placings but they all rode well and did us proud. Carisbrooke managed to finish on a total of 12 faults after two rounds but the fast times putting them in the individual placings meant that the team finished 2nd overall. Well done to both teams!
